Bourbon barrel-aged Belgian-style dark ale with cacao nibs and pecans – 14.5% ABV

We took this chocolate turtle candy-inspired beer and aged it in bourbon barrels for an extra decadent layer of complexity. Brewed with cacao nibs, toasted pecans, and plenty of caramel malts, it's somewhere between a Belgian-style dark ale and a smooth, chocolatey confection. This immensely complex ale is meant to be savored and shared.

I have a 12.7 oz bottle bought in a 2020 vintage collection direct from the brewery. The Bruery makes good beers and barrel aging usually turns out well. I select my Chimay glass this early evening for the tasting, seems appropriate. The pour is a dark mahogany, there’s a bare ring of parchment foam circling the glass and a moderate carbonation. The nose is delightful with bourbon, chocolate and charred grain, it’s as if this is an imperial stout instead of a Belgian ale. Now the drink and it is really fine also. I taste ripe dark plums, black raisins, scorched toast, malt, vanilla, more of the chocolate, leather, and a touch of strawberries. Plenty of booziness and I get a slight burn too. This is as good a beer as I’ve had in a long time. And I do think this is a strong dark Belgian ale, not much question on that

Bottle at RBWG. It pours a dark brown color with an off white head. The aroma is nutty with some almond-like oxidation notes. Toasted malt. The flavor is very nutty with strong cocoa and nice supporting notes of dark fruit. Fig, dates and maybe some sherry. Another one that seems to have done well with some age. A good sipper.
