The formulation for this delicate beer came from the Brauerei zum Schiff in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria. Bayern Brewing’s proprietor, Jürgen Knöller, was one of the last of five brewers that brewed this special beer in 1979 before the brewery, which was founded in 1540, sadly closed its doors due to the owner’s passing.
In fall of 2007, when it became apparent that the crisis of extremely high raw material prices would continue, the Bayern team decided to test the market with a brew that uses a very large amount of energy and raw materials while being the most difficult, labor-intensive, demanding beer that anyone could create. We told our distributors that we would do two brews at 1000 gallons each to see whether the market could handle the premium price that we had to charge due to these factors.
Our “Super Brew” lasted only a couple of months and then completely sold out.
So Bayern Brewing continues to brew Face Plant while its popularity continues to grow. Thus Doppelweizen has been revived here in Missoula, Montana, USA. We hope you will enjoy a piece of living beer history and a specialty beer that is truly rare, even in the Northwest’s highly diversified beer landscape.

Can, no dating.
It pours what looks to be a clear mahogany with an excellent head of off white foam, gawd, look at that sticky lacing.
Nose has wheat, lightly spiced bitterness, a bit of toffee, malty but not really sweet.
Taste is light spicing, toffee, wheat, earthy kind of sweet malt. Some bitterness from the what I reckon is some dark chocolate. I'd put this in the gentle side of the style.
Creamy mouthfeel.
It lacks punch compared to its German counterparts but I enjoyed it.

Bottle courtesy of Derek. Higher ABV not readily apparent. Nice silky body, medium creamy head. Toasty malts, decent weizenbock.

12 oz bottle from a six pack bought at a tiny little store in Montana. Pours opaque dark brown with a medium beige head with decent retention. Aroma is of dark fruits, caramel, light banana. Taste is lightly sweet, tangy and a little savory; no bitterness. A little boozy. Body seems a little thin, texture foamy and a tad watery. Doesn’t taste bad but this might be the boringest weizenbock I’ve ever had. It doesn’t have the clove character I crave in this style.

Bottle: Dark leathery brown with a bubbly beige head. Smells malty, husky, and grainy. Light florals. Lots of carbonation at first and brisk. Mellows out after a few minutes into a toasty, caramel, toffee, and floral piece. Light yeast presence. Finish is dry and somewhat grassey.
