Duvel is a natural beer with a subtle bitterness, a refined flavour and a distinctive hop character. The unique brewing process, which takes about 90 days, guarantees a pure character, delicate effervescence and a pleasant sweet taste of alcohol. Apart from pure spring water, which is the main ingredient of beer, barley is the most important raw material. Barley must germinate for five days in the malt house, after which malt remains. The colour of the malt and as a consequence also of the beer is determined by the temperature. Duvel obtains its typical bitterness by adding various varieties of aromatic Slovenian and Czech hops. We use only exclusive hops that are renowned for their constant, outstanding quality. Duvel ferments for the first time in tanks at 20 to 26°C. The brewer uses his own culture for this. The original yeast strain, which Victor Moortgat himself selected in the 1920’s, originates from Scotland. After maturing in storage tanks in which the beer is cooled down to -2°C, the drink is ready for bottling. Thanks to the addition of extra sugars and yeast, the beer ferments again in the bottle. This occurs in warm cellars (24°C) and takes two weeks. Then the beer is moved to cold cellars, where it continues to mature and stabilise for a further six weeks. This extra long maturation period is unique and contributes to the refined flavour and pure taste of Duvel.

Bottle. Bready malt aroma with notes of spicy Belgian yeast, banana, clove, coriander and grainy malt. Pours clear golden colored with a large white head that has excellent retention and good lacing. Starts with bready malt, banana and clove flavors as well as having a lively mouthfeel. Finishes dry but smooth with spicy Belgian yeast, grainy malt and coriander flavors. Excellent.

Wow I can’t believe that I have never rated this one before. Consistently good for a mass-marketed belgian. Surprisingly light.

As usual, it is an original beer, perfect that I share with Massimo, a bit sparkling, malty, high fermentation, typical Belgian yeast, sour. 11.08.2017, tasting it with pleasure, at home, Lausanne, Prélaz, buying it at Paris.

Review based on the BJCP2021 guidelines (style 25C). Bottle 75 cl (Batch L33006 11:00 - BB: 06 2019 - Bottled on December 2016). AROMA: medium to medium-high alcoholic aroma with a medium-low aged light malt. slight fruity note. APPEARANCE: gold color and very slightly hazy. large off-white head, with good retention. lace formation. TASTE: initial medium-low aged malt with a slight old port character. medium-high bitterness with a dry finish and slightly bitter. MOUTHFEEL: medium-high carbonation. medium-light body. alcoholic warmth. OVERALL: an aged example of a well-known Belgian beer with subtle flavor additions. maybe it shouldn't be aged so long (9 years in this case).

Bottled. Pours deep golden with thin, but long lasting white head. Yeasty, fruity aroma combined with some malts and grass in aroma and taste. Medium bodied and lively carbonated, despite the ABV it’s easily drinkable. Not bad, expected more tho.
