Duvel is a natural beer with a subtle bitterness, a refined flavour and a distinctive hop character. The unique brewing process, which takes about 90 days, guarantees a pure character, delicate effervescence and a pleasant sweet taste of alcohol. Apart from pure spring water, which is the main ingredient of beer, barley is the most important raw material. Barley must germinate for five days in the malt house, after which malt remains. The colour of the malt and as a consequence also of the beer is determined by the temperature. Duvel obtains its typical bitterness by adding various varieties of aromatic Slovenian and Czech hops. We use only exclusive hops that are renowned for their constant, outstanding quality. Duvel ferments for the first time in tanks at 20 to 26°C. The brewer uses his own culture for this. The original yeast strain, which Victor Moortgat himself selected in the 1920’s, originates from Scotland. After maturing in storage tanks in which the beer is cooled down to -2°C, the drink is ready for bottling. Thanks to the addition of extra sugars and yeast, the beer ferments again in the bottle. This occurs in warm cellars (24°C) and takes two weeks. Then the beer is moved to cold cellars, where it continues to mature and stabilise for a further six weeks. This extra long maturation period is unique and contributes to the refined flavour and pure taste of Duvel.

330ml bottle. Cloudy light gold, good sized frothy head, lots of retention and lacing. Aroma of fruity yeast, grains, creamy malts, mild herbal hops. Taste is caramel malts, booze, herbs, banana, berries, bittersweet finish. Medium to full bodied, smooth. Yes more please.

Bottle 0,75ltr with a black label. The granddaddy of the Belgian Devilbrews. Hazy golden ale with a big foamy head and a great spices added.

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours an unclear orange color, with a medium, frothy, beige head. The aroma is orange cream, grains of paradise, green banana, and biscuit. Sweet and nicely yeasty, with a mild, musty bitterness. Medium body, velvety, and lively. Delightful, quality, balanced, and complex. Delicious!

Notes from January 2011 Four pack gift set w/ glass given to me for Christmas. Pretty sure this was bought fresh at Costco & not from under the spotlights at Stop & Shop. Best Before: 05 2013 Glass that came with the set is defective(lopsided base, just like my last one), but I'll chance it just for the review. Insane crown of stiff snow. Bubbly nucleation point checking in. Gold straw-colored, with just a twinge of haze. Sediment mostly stays in the bottle. Blobs of lace erratically stain the glass. Smells of fresh mixed bitter greens & lemon upfront. With doughy yeast, crusty Italian bread, white peppercorns, sea salt & just a touch of malt sweetness bringing up the rear. Taste upfront has a sweet, buttery chardonnay/doughy yeast combo(that doesn't come through as much if your hesitating friend only takes a small sip. So no hesitating!). Fantastic herbals & soft shallot-y onion sweetness. A little salt too. Finish is all crusty/doughy yeast, dry & eager to continue drinking. Carbonation starts of strong, but dies off quickly. Body has a wheat-y feel. Alcohol isn't well hidden. A classic, but in a blind tasting, I doubt I'd give this good of a score. The subtleties in the hop profile just get lost under all the super fresh American beers available drowning my senses.

Bottle. I can't believe I didn't rate this yet. This is classics. Yeasty in a Belgian way. One of the first beers that got me off the spares of eurolagers.

Spicy aroma. Flavor has hints of sweet fruit underneath a peppery, spicy alcohol taste. Lasting alcohol burn afterwards.
