There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious.
On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from Hannaford, Exeter NH. Aroma is roasted malts with fruity/resiny hops with mild chocolate and caramel, whiff of dirty clothes hamper. Appearance is almost black (hazy dark ruby red with light source directly behind) with mild discernible sparkle, finger-width off-white head with poor retention and fair sudsy lacing. Taste is mix of roasted malts with some chocolate and floral/resiny/citrus hops with mix of bitter and sweet trading off. Booze hidden well. Palate is medium bodied with creamy texture, late lively carbonation at tip of tongue and all the complexity present in the finish. Overall, this is very black IPA-like and quite good.

355ml bottle. Clear, dark hazelnut colour with ruby red glimmer and late awakening, huge, thick, creamy, mostly to fully lasting, superbly lacing, beige head, building ’latte macchiato’ layers like strata appropriate to ecstasize every geologist. Malty aroma is rich in nutty and toffee notes, hoppy overtones span a broad area from fruity orange to herbal mint. Taste is minimally sweet nuttily malty, toffee notes, a touch of caramel, butter, nougat and cocoa, hoppy counterweight serves up orange, orange zest, mint - flavours fully compatible with the malt body, whereas the bitterness is not. Not that far from a Barleywine...

Bottle, 12oz. As Smuttynose Durty Mud Season, An almost clear one, brown in color and with a small, beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted and quite hoppy. Caramel, pine cones and orange zest. It’s full-bodied, soft and with a nice carbonation, quite dry. Roasted malts and some coffee blends nicely with the citrusy, piney and bitter hops. Lasting finish. A quite nice one, easy drinkable, lovely hoppy and tasteful all the way. 150611
