Imperial stout is descended from the strongest - ’stoutest’ - porter brewed in Britain in the 18th century, a beer that found particular favour with the Tsar of Russia in St Petersburg, which is where it is believed to get its ’imperial’ designation from. It was a beer that could be laid down for years, or enjoyed straight away.
Strannik: the pilgrim, the one who travels. A beer of simple means - deriving strength from pale malted barley and character through four roasted malts. British hops provide both the rounded bitterness and the floral, spicy notes to compliment the roast and chocolate.

330ml bottle. Batch 3298 with about 7 years of ageing. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a short-lived frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, big liquorice, toffee, boozy alcohol. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a rich, oily, roasty, liquorice, dark chocolate, warm alcohol bitter palate. Full bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle from Beermoth, Manchester. Extremely dark and certainly strong tasting, this slow sipper does have a velvet smoothness to its roasted malts that's very pleasant once you get used to the alcohol content in this one. Sat in my cellar for over 6 years but absolutely fine when opened.

On tap @Luppolo Station (Rome). Nera, densa, impenetrabile, schiuma beige media. Al naso note etiliche, esteri, cioccolato, pan di spagna al rum. In bocca è sbilanciata sul dolce, cioccolatosa, con finale appena amarognolo, alcol. Corpo pieno, carbonazione media. Grezza, si fa fatica a finirla.

Bubbly dark beige head immediately left a dark brown slowly carbonating body - looks awful. Sweet dark berry & spice aroma. Medium bodied, no carbonation & a soft finish. Medicinal tastes of herbs, spice, liquorice, burnt aniseed & cough drops.

33cl can at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours dark brown with limited brownish foam. Aroma is pecan, coca cola (or whatever is similar to it), peanut butter. Body is fairly dense with minimal carbonation. Taste is quite sweet, with some astringency. Finish is average in length.

Aroma: Dark roasted malt with dark fruity sweetness and port-like alcohol. Flavour: Fruity sweet with ripe dark berries and dark roasted malt. Notes of coffee and a hint of vanilla.
