Imperial stout is descended from the strongest - ’stoutest’ - porter brewed in Britain in the 18th century, a beer that found particular favour with the Tsar of Russia in St Petersburg, which is where it is believed to get its ’imperial’ designation from. It was a beer that could be laid down for years, or enjoyed straight away.
Strannik: the pilgrim, the one who travels. A beer of simple means - deriving strength from pale malted barley and character through four roasted malts. British hops provide both the rounded bitterness and the floral, spicy notes to compliment the roast and chocolate.

Poured from keg, taster on the house at Craft Beer Co in Clerkenwell. A covering layer, tan-coloured, at the top of a near-black coloured body. Rich aroma of brown and black malts with a touch of dark fruits. Deep malt-fruity taste, dark chocolate and dried fruits promoting a little impression of sherry. Long-lived, mid-sweet, malt-fruity finish. Full bodied. Lovely (London 28.09.2014).

330ml bottle from, I think, Beermoth. Been sat on the beer shelf for quite a while now I felt it’s day had come. Pours black with a nice beige head and big whalloping dark malt aroma. Not too heavy with a nice bitter balance, some smooth liquorice and chocolate and a nice helping of dark malts. Lovely stuff.

330ml bottle from Beer Huis, Ossett - Thick black body, thick tan head initially, fading to a thin lacing film. Nose is dark chocolate, liquorice, smoke, boozy roasted malts amongst others. Taste is a strong burnt nutty mouthful, smoky, bitter with a lovely robust mouthfeel. Excellent effort.

Bottle at home. Pours deep black, meaty, smoky aroma, taste is sweet, very bitter, dry peat, roasted chocolate, a little thin.

Keg at Craft Beer Co, Clapham, London. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Roasty, chocolate, coffee aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit. Decent Imperial Stout.

Keg at the Cask, Pimlico, 06/12/13. Mid black with thin tan edgeing. Nose is light booze, chocolate, brown sugars, earthy, dark fruits. Taste comprises roast malt, dark chocolate, a touch lactic, tangy dark fruit, tar, booze. Medium bodied with a pair of nuts, fine carbonation, warming alcohol in the finish. Sub par for the style, a little harsh on the booze front without an enormous amount of depth to the flavours.

Keg at CBC Clapham. It pours near black with a minimal tan head. The nose is bitter-sweet, roasted malt, earth, toast, liquorice, coffee, spice, chocolate and sweet plum. The taste is smooth, toasty, earth, liquorice, charred wood, ash, citrus peel, chocolate and light alcohol warmth. Full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. All comes together rather well. Tasty.
