In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew -- a dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. It's a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.
Featuring the album's iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Head's Bitches Brew was unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, on June 5, 2010, at the National Building Museum, Washington DC.

According to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, the ale is "the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album."
Sam was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan."

Draft @ Cervezas Dogfish Head night. Batch #2. Pours black with thin brown head. Aromas of burnt malts, chocolate with some coffee. Similar flavors. Thick mouthfeel with minimal carbonation. A pretty decent impy stout.

Pours a solid black with a good sized long lasting creamy tan head that leaves a respectable amount of lace on the way through the glass. Smells of roast coffee and chocolate. This also has a sweet maltiness and an herbal minty aroma that I can only assume comes from gesho root. Mix that all together with a touch of ethanol and you get an unusual and unique aroma. I get the usual stout like tastes of chocolate and roast but this one has a bit more going on. I get a spicy minty herbal character that almost gets to the point of turning me off, but then subsides. I am reminded of the woodiness that I get from Palo Santo Marron. Long lingering roasty and menthol finish. Medium body and carbonation with a creamy/oily mouthfeel. I’m not sure I would call this a RIS, but then again how would you classify it? I was put off with the herbal flavors a little bit at first, but as I polished off my first glass it was growing on me. Nice to try this because it is a bit different, but probably not something I would seek out again.

Bottle. Thanks to Secret Santa!! Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate and coffee aroma with weak hints of hops. Roasted malty chocolate and coffee flavor with weak hints of honey. Has a roasted malty chocolate and coffee finish.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, exotic herbs, and wood. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, caramel, wood, and exotic herbs, leading to a dry, woody, and roasted finish.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of wavers1. Pours a pitch black with a small off-white head. Intense hard roast aroma with a whiff of smoke. Solid body, hard roasted malts, sweet and juicy dark fruit yet with an unpleasant metallic tang. Again a discreet smoky touch. Hard roast finish. The metal is quite off-putting. 290311

Bottle shared by Rick at Brewforia. Deep black color with a dark tan head. Big sweet toasty aroma with dark pitted fruits. Moderate palatte, some sweetness but dissipates qu key on the tounge. Roasted bit not overly sharp and bitter. Balanced and very tasty.

750ml bottle pours a lightly viscous, opaque black with a thin, creamy, spitty tan head. Nose has strong roasted barley, burnt toast, nuts, earthy, tobacco leaves, some light sweetness. It smells dirty, like wet dirt. Smells and tastes like decent homebrew. Flavor is sweet, malty, burnt/dry toast, coffee, burnt sugar, pencil lead. Full bodied and sweet, a little silky. There’s a lingering off roasty character that takes away from the finish. It seems a little heavy handed and a little sloppy.

the aroma is of roasted malts and a little hop note that suggests this is going to be a bit different than the other imperial stouts ive had. The taste is equally impressive with the sweetness of honey in the forefront that really adds to the flavor and does not dominate in any way. the roasted malts have a bit of a chocolate flavor and coffee not unlike their world wide stout without the abv burn. and thats the last thing, the abv is not present anywhere in the taste, maybe a little burn in the back of the throat, but really nothing that would make it off putting. great beer,

750 ml bottle shared by jb. Pour is a murky black, perhaps a hint of brown, along with a smallish light tan head. Aroma is roast malt, ashy, along with some honey spice and sweetness. Taste is big roast malt initially, followed close behind by pine hops and moving into the honey spiced sweetness of the nose. The roast honey lingers long in the aftertaste. Palate is medium to heavy bodies, coats the mouth fully, and then becomes viscous and slides down through the finish. Interesting take on an imperial stout. Thanks for lugging this one and sharing John, I had really wanted to try it.
