Weird Beard was on my list of beers to try in the UK but I had no chance to try it their. I brought home their decadent stout and it burst out of the can in my bag on the way back so I picked this up for 600 yen at CRAFT BEER BASE. Coincidentally it is also a NZ hopped beer but this 5.3% beer is a Pale Ale rather than Kirin’s 5.5% "IPA". Pouring a nice copper gold with a solid head of foam it has a fantastic juicy tropical fruits aroma. Light bodied with a slick mouthfeel, it’s quite bitter giving some butteriness and astringency with a ton of hops. I get the feeling this may have suffered heat damage in transit. The hopping is subdued but this 7 month old beer (Batch 155) gives citrus, mango and grapefruit notes. Alright but I should have tried something of theirs fresh in the UK but I only saw bombers and a few canned beers. Prices were in the 2-3£ range each(4£ possibly?) so Japan’s prices aren’t that bad but hoppy beers need to be fresher.

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, golden colour with a short and slightly off-white foamy layer. Almost juicy fruity hoppy aroma with notes of citrus, grapefruit and tangerine, backed by mildly bready malt and a tinge of yeasty spice. Moderately bitter and delicately sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Slightly bready malt character with a touch of caramel and a good dash of mainly fruity and slightly spicy hops, lingering into the moderately bitter and delicately sweet finish. Good one. 07.IV.15

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head that lasts throughout. Aromas of lemon, mango, passion fruit with some weed as well. Taste is more of the same, but a nice balance of caramel malt that goes well with the dankiness. Fruit comes back out on the finish. Nice bitterness. Really nice! --- Beer merged from original tick of Mariana Trench on 06 Aug 2015 at 19:23 - Score: 7

Shows very dark amber with practically no filtering and sparse white foam. The nose shows moderate notes of lemon and hints of cannabis with slight notes of sweet malts. The palate is full bodied and lightly carbonated. Moderate to high intense notes of the lemon and tropical hops showing through with a very hemp -like bitterness at the end. The IPA bitterness only shows hints here. Over all fun to drink.

Light golden color. Lovely tropical fruit, with mangoes and pineapples. Mouth smooth low-medium bitterness. Dry with low bitterness in the finish but mangoes just linger. Really fantastic use of NZ hops.
