This beer pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head and smell of toasted coffee and light cocoa. It has a pronounced roasted coffee flavour with slightly sweet cocoa notes concluding with a subtle, well balanced, hop bitterness.

Bottle. First off, I love chocolate and I love chocolate beers. This one was "Boatswain Chocolate Stout" from Trader Joe’s. Deep, dark brown almost black. No head. Aroma was burnt grains and chocolate. Taste was bitter dark chocolate, coffee and roasted grains. Nice.

Sampled from a 12 oz can this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head. The aroma was dry, roasty, and woody with a hint of cocoa. The flavor was dry, bitter, roasty and woody with acidic burnt coffee. Long finish. Medium body.

Can from Trader Joe's as 'Boatswain'. Dark brown in colour, with a thin, beige, head. An easy drinking sweet stout, with plenty of milk chocolate character and a gentle finish. Fine.

Bottle at the 10th Boise Imperial Stout Tasting. Labeled as Rhinelander Boatswain Stout. Dark brown pour with a small tan head. Smells of roast malts, coffee, and chocolate. Flavor of coffee and chocolate, a little on the light side.

22oz bottle pours out dark brown almost black topped with a tan head. Nose light roast chocolate sweetness and some coffee. Taste is more of the light roast malts chocolate sweetness.

Bottle pour. Appearance is dark brown with tinge of red--almost opaque--with finger width creamy beige head with poor retention and trace lacing. Aroma is light roasted malts with mild chocolate. Taste is bittersweet roasted malts, chocolate and light coffee. Palate is medium bodied with thick, smooth texture, soft carbonation and chocolatey-roasted malt finish. Overall, the elements are all there but everything is a little on the light side.

Purchased under Boatswain Chocolate Stout at Trader Joe in Vegas. Pours a real dark brown colour with a frothy beige head, long lasting with creamy lacing. Chocolate malt aromas with the cacao added. Some stronger hops than usual for this style. Eventually, nutty notes comes out with mild coffee. Some sweetness flavours from the chocolate with roasted malts and light bitterness in the finish. This chocolate stout is a little too sweet, rich overall. Started with a lot of hops for the style, but now has disappeared in the taste.

22 oz bottle as Boatswain Chocolate Stout, poured into a tulip pint glass. Dark brownish black with two fingers of nice tan head. Aromas of maple syrup, milk chocolate, roasty notes. Tastes of milk chocolate, light roasty notes, vanilla. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Not bad for two bucks.

A bomber for $2.50 @ trader joe’s. Mine said boatswain chocolate stout. Personally I like name bunny stout better. Beautiful darker beer pour. Smell is a tad metallic. Taste is perhaps a little ruder than expected but it certainly has an ashy stout kick to it. Not sure if I like the hop bitterness presented here. Good buy any day for a beer of this quality.
