Tart saison ale aged in an oak foeder

Saison Ardennes is a tart saison, hand-crafted to embody the dependable, spirited nature of a classic Belgian-style farmhouse ale. This includes a crisp malt profile, rustic floral and spice notes and lively carbonation. Our rendition expresses further depth and character from its fermentation and maturation in a large oak foeder. Saison Ardennes will continue to pleasantly evolve in the bottle, thanks to the presence of wild yeast added for bottle conditioning.

2018 version, tasted aug. 2024. aroma is tempered wild yeasty with a level of blendedness, wholesomness, roundedness that I have not sniffed in belgian saison's, the little reduction in craziness is compensated by an extreme attention to balance that is reeking gourmet beer. good job. i'm sure other raters will fill in the aroma details. I even get stuff resembling cedar wood, wtf. complex... flavor is nicely sour, extremely smooth, fainter notes of wood, wild yeasts and sweet malts balance perfectly, faint caramelly buttery note which adds to the balance but is a bit confusing. This is a seriously good saison, better than many belgian, and it's pretty rare people outside belgium manages to do that.

Bottle, 0.375l. Aroma is musty, vinous, woody and floral with barnyard note. Pours hazy orange golden color with medium sized creamy off-white head, good lacing and sparkling appearance. Taste starts tart grainy, citrusy and vinous, following is funky, herbal and slightly medicinal with rather dry and mild spicy mouthfeel. Full body, creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Funky Ardennes classics…

Bottle, 375ml. It pours a minimalistic white head over a lightly hazy pale golden colored body. The aroma has a light funkyness, with generic fruityness, some pale malts, notes of flowers and grass, with a peppery yeast notes and some wood. It's full-bodied, semi-dry and softly carbonated, with fruityness dominating the flavor. There's some pale malts in the back, with wood, tannins, pepper, grass and some flower, all quite subtle. Medium length finish. Easy drinkable and quite tasteful, although a bit too gentle all the way. 221113

(Bottle, 0.375 l, thanks tiong, at Arde, 20211008) The beer poured golden and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had wood, spiciness, earth and fruitiness. Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were wood, fruitiness, spiciness, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was woody, tart and bitter. A delicious spicy brew with balanced notes of wood and tartness.
