Any statistician will tell you that the numbers can be deceiving. So, even though I really dislike this beer and I will never drink it again, I THINK YOU SHOULD. I mean I really respect Sam for making this series. They are not intended for the masses but for us the hoytiy toytiy beer drinkers. I personally, don’t like root beer and I have had a root beer mead made by LI Meadery, I knew there was no way I was going to like this beer. However, I was really excited to drink it. There are differing thoughts, both being well stated on this site about these beers. Some say don’t even waste your money (Forums). And the other one (can’t find the link) explains that this is a good way to find out what flavors shouldn’t be in a beer. Well, on with the show.
Pours nicely enough, a soda-like copper color with a tan head. Aroma is strong and its all weird. Smells like cough medicine combined with potpourri air freshener. My friend told me it smelled exactly like pouring Captain Morgan and Cherry Pepsi on some coals in a cedar wood sauna. Fortunately, the taste is slightly better. Those aromas are a bit muted. If it wasn’t for the potpourri taste, it would be half drinkable.

Interesting beer - basically I’m approaching it like alot of spiced beers, but with the uncommon contributions of sassafras and wintergreen. Both come through very apparently, especially in the nose, but you can taste them too. A licoricey aroma is initially pretty obvious but fades in favor of the wintergreen/sassafras. Also, a barest hint of vanilla comes though in the nose, and it works because most beers with vanilla that I’ve had were gross. This rivals Anchor’s spiced Xmas beer in terms of a nice balance of herbal flavors and dark caramelized/earthy malts and a velvety soft mouthfeel. The finish is herbal and slighly medicinal. I’d have to say I like it, but perhaps I might like it more in January, rather than late June! Cloudy copper color with some tight lacing but otherwise quick head.
