Spring has sprung at the little brewery in Shiner, TX (pop. 2,070). And with it, our newest brew, Shiner Dortmunder-Style Spring Ale. The Old World classic pours deep gold in color, with a white head and smooth flavor. Its medium hop bitterness and hints of grain, honey and floral hops will refresh you like a sun-drenched nap on a lush green lawn.

I’ve had so much luck with Shiner brews that when I saw a single of Spring Ale sitting on the shelf in early fall, I thought why not jump on the chance to enjoy a subpar past-its-prime Dortmunder and help free up some space for the incomng Octoberfest ales. Nice golden color, a lot like honey, and no real head. Lightly floral in the aroma and right into the taste. Picks up a little grass and dough. Not too terribly bad, but overpriced at $1.19 per bottle.

Bottle. Sweet, bready barley malt aroma. Clear amber with a small beige head. Sweet biscuity malt flavor with a light grassy hops finish. Medium body and carbonation. A little too sweet for my taste, and hops were leaning towards harshness.

12 oz. bottle. Pours gold with a thin, off-white head. The aroma is bread, barnyard must, and light apricots. The flavor is malty sweetness, and herbal hops. The palate is medium, grainy, and malty. Overall, not bad.

Location: Location: 12 oz bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 1/30/12

Aroma: The nose is rather light, with some sweet malty, grains, bread, and grass
Appearance: It pours a clear golden color with a foamy off-white head and medium lacing
Flavor: The taste is lightly sweet and malty/doughy, with a light bitter, and a crisp hoppy finish
Palate: The body is fairly light, but not too watery, with a crisp/clean mouthfeel, and a grassy finish
Overall Impression: This one was actually better then I expected. I mean I haven't really loved many of the Shiner offerings that I have tried lately, but this one is the exception. It was basically what I wanted from the style. Sure, this isn't anything special, but it is drinkable and tasty enough.

Bottle (1-29-12). Slightly sour barley malt and hay aroma. Golden yellow color with small head and mild efferverscence. Slightly sweet barley malt flavor - hint of soap in the finish. Okay - really pretty good for a Dortmunder (although even most German examples are pretty mediocre). / 4-27-19 (Frost) no changes except maybe to add more corn aroma and flavor. Still getting the soapiness in the finish.

12oz bottle pours clear gold with thin white head. The mild aroma offers up grainy malts, caramel malts and faint spicy hops. The taste has a nice level of spicy hops and floral hop bitterness to go along with sweet malts, some caramel malts and some grainy malts. Nice Dortmunder that manages to avoid becoming overly sweet with its pleasing level of fresh hoppiness.

Clear golden coloured body with a light amber glow and a very thin off-white head. Aroma of malt, cardboard, lemons and very little else. Light-bodied; Pungent malty and cardboardie, bready taste with a lot of not pleasant malt that is very bittering with no pleasant fresh flavours. Aftertaste shows even more bad tastes that leave the mouth even worse off - pungent metallic and cardboardie flavours. Overall, not such a great beer that even the dominant flavours aren’t pleasant - way too cloying and overly powerful. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Chantilly, Virginia on 27-March-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 31-May-2011.
