Part of a seasonal voyage platter at the Heartland Brewery and Chophouse, 43rd St, NYC. Pours clear bright chestnut brown with a small lasting off-white head. Aroma is roasted, syrupy, and chocolaty. Medium to heavy sweetness, light bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Aroma was its highlight.

Holziger Antrunk, Karamell, in Vordergrund steht ein dumpfes Aroma, das mir überhaupt nicht gefällt. Kaum herb, dennoch unsüffig in meinem Augen. 8/7/6/8//8

Tap at Heartland, Union Square, 24/11/13. Dark mahogony brown with a good sized light beige head. Nose is cardboard, light toffee, fruity notes, toasted malt. Taste comprises toffee, light cocoa, straw, berry fruit light. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finale - crisp and clean. Ok - a little overly sweet though.

Draught at the brewpub, Radio City
Dark brown color. Sweetish aroma of roasted malt. Good taste of caramel and roasted malt, a bit milky, light sweetness. Interesting Schwarzbier.

Had this at the South Street Seaport location, and the cramped environment detracted from my enjoyment - not that the beer was that good anyway - a respectable attempt at the style, but its thin body, limited malt presence, and overly bitter finish made it one I will not try again.

2003 6.5% ABV Version. Initially is almost black, but as it settles, clears up a good amount and becomes a brighter mahogany. Good amount of off-white head. Very sweet, with less roastiness than I would expect on the finish. Lots of chocolate velvet flavor. Quite rich and smooth. Good stuff, but not quite the best of style, but well made anyhow. Very even slight roast aroma, with a touch of hops.
