Old World India Pale Ale

Aroma of malts, hay, caramel, grassy hops, earthy notes, fruits. Flavour is caramel malts with light bitterness in the aftertaste. A different kind of IPA. Interesting to drink.

Bottle from Sept 2011. A hazed murky reddish amber ipa with a thick frothy creamy mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with light vinous character, dark fruits, light resinous hops, OK. In mouth, a sweet caramel malt with light resinous hops, light dark fruits, OK.

660ml bottle online from Brewdog, sampled Oct 2014. Pours clear orange amber with a cream head. Aroma: malty, caramel, orange citrus, hoppy. Taste: moderate sweet & bitter, malt prominent, orange, pine, earthy hops. Bitter finish. Medium body, light carb

Bottle Deep golden color. Oily hops and marmelade in the aroma. Firm grassy hopbitter flavor with hints of vegetables. Anis, mint and soft spicy notes. Well hidden tropical and citrusfruit. Good stuff!

Hazy golden color, small head. The aroma is mild, lightly citrusy, some paper. Dry mouthfeel, smooth; some flavor of malt that is not exciting, it's stale and old; paper feeling, touch of honey, and chicory bitterness.
Not very good.

(Bottle) Hazy amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of citrus, orange (hard orange candy), apricots, grapefruit, black-currant, some toffee and earthy, citric hops. Malty, fruity taste with citrus, pink grapefruit, apricots, some honey, caramel and a generous citric, slightly earthy, bitterness in the finish. Medium body, fairly dry. Tasty and well balanced IPA with a generous dose of English hops. Nice one.

From tap. Almost clear golden color with off white head. Malty aroma and light hoppy, caramel, bread, straw, grassy, light pine and citrus. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.

One of BrewDog’s two ’hommages’ to the great international beer styles of the 19the century, from a 75 cl bottle with fascinating, elaborate label telling the story of India pale ale. Thanks to Stefan for sharing this. Thick and stable, frothy, sticky, off-white head over a hazy, deep and warm orangey blonde, almost amber coloured beer. Lovely aroma of English style IPA at its best: dried flowers, white pepper, straw, dried orange peel, bread crust, whisky, roasted peanuts, dust and some oxidized caramelly malts. Clean fruitiness in the onset, soft, dried apricot with a touch of redcurrant, gently carbonated with a smooth, caramelly and very lightly nutty malt body, supple and smoothly leading to a complex, peppery and very floral hop bitter ending, with a deep earthy bitterness but remaining ’friendly’ in comparison with the tsunami of American style IPAs which floods the world these days. I have heard some older English beer lovers worrying about the survival of the original English interpretation of this omnipresent style, but if they all reach this level of quality, it can perfectly hold its own in this ever changing beer world in spite of, or perhaps thanks to, its long history.
