There is a much debate in the brewing world about the difference between porters and stouts. At one time the two were even considered synonyms. Nowadays porters are often more malted, while stouts tend to be more roasted in flavor. When we decided to add a dark beer to our repertoire we chose to pursue the rich, chocolate tones of a porter. This ale continues to gather accolades in the beer world for its strong malt backbone and well-balanced, bitter hops.

12 ounce bottle from Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. Pours a clear dark red color with tiny floating particles. Big roasty notes in the aroma with light chocolate notes. Taste is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee a bit of a lactic note and a lightly hoppy finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Near opaque brown color with a decent beige head. Aroma is quite chocolate. Plus fruits and nuts and stuff, but really chocolate. Medium body with coarse carbonation. Flavor is milky chocolate, with bitter burnt malt, and hints of floral hop. I think. Finishes with a slight touch of harsh bitter, but it’s mostly smooth. Very different porter - tastes good.

12 oz bottle. Very dark brown with a light tan head. Screwed up opening the bottle (darn unexpected screw-tops), so I have no idea what size the head would be otherwise. Anyhow, rich chocolate aroma with some roasted coffee notes. Flavor is chocolate, some dark fruit, roasted coffee. A little alcohol shows through. Not too bad.

Bottle: Deep brown pour with a modest, creamy beige head. Nice thick lacing. Nose is heavy of roasted malts, coffee, and a little cocoa. Creamy mouthful is dominated by the roast with a little coffee and light bitters. Rather enjoyable, yet not real dazzling. Still, nice brew. Thanks to mcox90.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown color, with a light tan head. The aroma is coffee, notes of bitter chocolate, and caramel. The flavor is a nice, pretty smooth chocolate and coffee flavors. It’s relatively sweet, and goes down pretty smooth.

Bottle, shared by Papsoe. It poured unclear, brown, with a reddish hue and a bit small, beige head. Coffee, mocha, some chocolate and burnt malt in the aroma. Dryish in the mouth, with burnt notes, lots of malt, and mocha, finishing with a wee hoppy bitterness. Medium fullness. A nice beer, but it could use some more hops to balance it. (071005)

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of KAggie97. Slightly hazy dark brown with an orange hue and a beige head. Aroma of dried fruits and hard roasted malts. Medium body with burned and ashy malt accents, lightly sweet with a burned malt astringency. But quite decent. 051007
