Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual decadance series, AleSmith Olde ale follows the tradition of classic British-style old ales. This rich, multi-forward ale showcases soft notes of currents and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde ale is ready to be enjoyed now or I can be age for upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself.

Botltle shared by Marcus. Fresh, medium dark fruit aromas. Imagine fresh raisins (oxymoron). Reddish tinged brown color. Full bodied with light, creamy carbonation. Flavor has underlying chocolate, raisin and possibly cherry. Quite vinous. Tastes like it has been in oak. Mouth smacking. Hops? Doubtless, but they must be blended into the fruit. More raisin impression comes with time.

Bottle from NYBeer - Thanks! Cracked this open for the Super Bowl, what a treat! Pours a ruddy red brown with a smaller beige head. Aroma is rich with maltiness, caramel, toffee, and vinous qualities. Flavor is again rich with malts, breadiness, brown sugar, raison, and a barley detectable amount of citrus. A nice warming effect and served as an excellent sipper for the entire game.

Sample from Odeed; Nose of spicy caramel malt, dark friut, and a little alcohol; murky medium brown with a small beige head; Flavor was a little tart caramel, spices, and alcohol in a medium body with a little bitterness for a finish.

Bottle. Thanks to JohnC for this great beer. Pours a hazy dark amber color with a small off-white head. Sweet malty and slightly spicy aroma. Sweet malty dry bitter and slightly hoppy and alcoholic flavor with some vanilla hints. Sweet malty finish with some hints of vanilla.

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a thin off-white head. Low hop, rich malt, and slight spice aroma. Caramel malt flavor with good depth. Some raisin and berry fruits. Alcohol present and gives some good warmth. Medium body. Woodsy malt lingers with alcohol and spice. Some sherry tones.

bottle, enjoyed at the Sunset Grille in Boston - Poured reddish brown with a thin head that left some decent lacing. The aroma is malty with some dark fruit notes and a hint of alcohol. The alcohol is a little more noticeable in the flavor, but I didn’t mind. The sweetness, fruit notes, caramel, and other flavors come to the fore. The finish lingers pleasantly as the warmth hits your stomache. For some reason the flavor reminded me a bit of Fuller’s Vintage Ale 2001, though even sweeter. Decadence is very good.

Cloudy amber color; sparse bubbles. Sweet caramel and toffee aroma, light butter and vanilla, light earthy hops. Sweet caramel and fudge flavor; it may be a bit buttery (therefore suspect); a soft nutty edge too; correct bitterness. The final is just lightly astringent. Good.

Cask at O’Brien’s, San Diego. Clear dark reddish brown. Raisiny, near portlike and very sweet with some cherry tones. Very liqueur-like with notes of orange and curacao. A massive onslaught of flavours, but finishes disappointingly dusty and alcoholic.

Sweet and full bodied. Some hops in the aroma as well as alcohol and raisins, flavor is mostly malt and alcohol, but there is dried fruit as well.

Milwaukee YEHa!05, brought by 1FastSTi. I’ve tried this twice, and it’s time to admit this beer is hugely disappointing. For an old ale, there’s very little depth and character to be found here. It pours like an average I2PA and tastes like an I2PA, with big piney, earthy hops, boring caramely, bready malts, and a punch of alcohol at the end. No plum pudding. No figs. No cigar smoke or stale oak. Rather, this is a rather harsh and muddled beer that does not display the depth or character necessary for it to age well. Whiff!
