Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual decadance series, AleSmith Olde ale follows the tradition of classic British-style old ales. This rich, multi-forward ale showcases soft notes of currents and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde ale is ready to be enjoyed now or I can be age for upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself.

Bottle from 2013, as "Old Ale". Pours clear reddish chestnut, large creamy beige head, dissipates fairly quickly but with lots of residual and nice lacing. Aroma is malty, dried cherries, toffee, hints of cinnamon, toasted caramel, brown sugar, raisins, hints of sherry. Flavor is pretty sweet, light plus bitter, rich and malty with a light sherry note that is not really a detractor. Full body and creamy mouthfeel. Solid Old Ale.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo. Brown pour, no head. Aromas of raisin, dates, christmas cake, chocolate, toffee, walnut. Flavours of bonfire toffee, black treacle, chocolate cake, currants, raisin, some dark fruit. Exceedingly vinous (which is unsurprising). Long, warm sweet finish. Nice!

750ml bottle. Pours reddish brown with a smooth head. Aroma of ripe fruits, berries, earthy notes, caramel, toffee and hints of syrup. Taste is sweetish, caramely and malty with some berries, toffee, syrup and berries. Finish is caramely, earthy and sweetish with some malts, toffee, berries and hints of ripe fruits. Feels like a mix of a heavy amber ale and an English barley wine. Quite a heavy slow sipper.

2010 Decadence. Pours a cloudy brown with medium beige head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is dark fruit, plum and figs, caramel, pure sugar. Medium body, caramel, roast, dark fruit, hides alcohol well, very nice.

Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with red highlights and a large creamy-soapy orange-brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet with raisins, plum, pear, brandy and molasses. The flavor was sweet with toasty malts, molasses, cherry, anise, raisin, fig, brandy, toffee and a touch of a medicinal presence. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Excellent.

Nicely done. Old oxidized aroma and some caramel here. Some basement musk. Some sweetness in finish. Bottle shared at tasting.
