Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual decadance series, AleSmith Olde ale follows the tradition of classic British-style old ales. This rich, multi-forward ale showcases soft notes of currents and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde ale is ready to be enjoyed now or I can be age for upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself.

Bottle @ Appellation Comely Bank tasting thanks to I think BenH, but it might’ve been McNeillR, Stuuu666 or Benjii. Appearance - dark amber to chestnut with a nice head. Nose - lots of fresh honey and some breadiness. Taste - oh, it’s pancakes and syrup. Nice. Palate - medium to full bodied and similar texture through the middle section and a big finish, which given the style is fine. Overall - yes, great!

Bottle courtesy of Håkan. Labeled Old Ale. Pours deep wooden brown with a small creamy pale goldenish brown head head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, moist soil, orange peal, pear and hints of glue and alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with caramel, biscuits, toffee, moist soil, wood, pears, orange peal and alcohol. Mouthfeel is fat, round, viscous, tiny astringent and near full bodied. finish is tiny sweet and slightly bitter with biscuits, caramel, apples, pears, moist soil and alcohol. Tasty malt profile but not a huge fan of the apple/pear esters.

Sample at GABF 10/04/2014 (as 2014 Olde Ale), thanks to my BIL for assistance with note-taking. Hazy dark amber color with a medium thin light beige head that dissipates steadily. Strings of lacing. Aroma of malt, dark fruit and yeast. Full-bodied with flavors of bready malt, figs, butterscotch and yeast. The finish is dark fruits and yeast. Good beer overall.

Draft at GBBF 2013, Day 3 - London. Pours clear amber with a light, tan cream head. The aroma is all dried fruits and rich malts. Medium to big sweet flavor with more dried fruits, golden raisins, brown sugar. Full bodied with soft carbonation and oily mouthfeel. Sweet finish with light dryness, oily and aged fruits. Very tasty beer.
