5 oz. pour on tap at Cask and Vine (2016 vintage). Appearance is inky black with ring of beige head and no lacing. Aroma is strong roasted malt and toffee; hint of anise and leather. Taste is strong as aroma with late coffee bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with thick texture, average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, excellent strength and really smooth. Decent complexity.

29th July 2019, monthly share at Chez Sophie in Shrewsbury. Thanks Mike for this offering, a 2018 labelled bottle. Poured a dark ruby with a tanned topping. Smooth body feel, aroma held malty chocolate esters, the taste also malt and chocolate dominated, liquorice traces also.

500ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie July 19. Thanks to Mike, I think? Pours deep dark, medium beige head. Aroma has strong chocolate, caramel. Taste continues with an excellent caramelly sweet chocolate character, some fruity moments, coffee shades. Great stuff.

Pours deep black into an English pint. Mocha head with good retention recedes to mottle surface leaving scant sheets. Dark chocolate and licorice aromas. Thick with soy and espresso upfront turning to licorice before the lasting hot chocolate, vanilla and bitter earthy resin finish.

Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a pitch black color with a finger’s worth of white to off white foamy head that dissipated fairly nice. Light stringy lace.
The aroma had black licorice, some ash/char, and some dark and milk chocolate sweet and bitterness.
The flavor blended very nice between the sweet, the ash, and the bitterness. Good amount of the blend seemed to stride into the aftertaste and rolling into the finish.
The feel was about medium bodied with a great smoothness about it, somewhat silky with a sturdy ABV. Carbonation felt good.
Overall, very nice imperial stout well worthy to have again.

Bottle. Most recent vintage. Pitch black color the snifter. Head died real fast, showing no retention. The biggest aroma is black licorice, along with charred malt and a touch of chocolate nuances.

Mouthfeel is smooth and silky but the body isn’t what I consider full for the style. And at the gravity I was expecting more fullness. Licorice seems to dominate the palate, with notes of chocolate, raisins and prune juice. The ABV is almost completely hidden. Over all I love imperial stouts and this is a classic non- barrel aged example of the style. For my personal tastes it shows just a bit much licorice or anise flavor.

On tap at cask and Vine for Kelsen’s 2nd Anniversary party. Thick opaque black with a bubbly tan head. Big vinous fruity lightly tart notes atop a roasty chocolaty malt base. The brett adds lots of cherry pie and raisin notes to this beer. Light carbonation thick chewy heavy body. Still retains quite a bit of sweetness but that provides a nice counter to the fruity earthy tartness. Nice brew.

On tap at Cask and Vine, Rich roasty maltiness with bits of caramel and dark dried fruits. Solid earthy hop presence even after a year. Very tasty, glad I got to try this!
