(10/28/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Santa Rosa. 5.48%. Clear golden color with a white head. Aroma of malt, fruits (a bit of apple, peach, tropical fruits noes) and spicy notes. Sweetish malty flavor with caramel notes, fruits and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Pleasant.

Tap @ RR. Clear yellow color, short head. English blonde ale, but with more hops. Also bit sharper in taste. Malty body.

Batch 5. Pours hazy yellow with a lacing white head. Mild spiced and light orange to citric fruity. Medium dry and slight wheaty flavour with a mild spice note. Smooth and mild spiced flavoured into a light yeasty and spiced finish. Smooth and light fruity but also dry.7-3-8-4-15=3.7
From bottle, Papsoes blindtasting #12. Pours clear and golden, huge white aroma. Dry hoppy and slight bogmyrtle like. Mild wheaty and berry fruity flavoured. Light herbal touch to a mild bitterness and vague malty/wheaty sweet note into the far finish.5-3-5-3-10=2.6

Batch 005 (5.65%). Pours a clear gold body with a small, quickly vanishing white head. Aroma of apricots, nectarines, pear, clove, coriander and honey. Taste of light fruits, coriander, and a malty bitterness. Slightly creamy mouthfeel with light carbonation. Not my favorite beer from RR (is this a similar style to Doree?).
Batch 008 (5.15%). Pours with a hazy, very pale yellow body and a large white head. In my Bruery snifter it looks a lot like their berliner. Aromas of fresh cut grass, white pepper, tangerine, light yeast esters and aromatics. Decently hoppy (European hops). Pear. Flavors are light. Straw, grass, pear, [some spice, that I can’t quite put my tired palate on]. Quite spicy from both yeast and hops. Very lively carbonation, quite dry on the palate. Spicy and easy to drink. Nicely done. Overall score would go unchanged.

75 cl bottle from Ledgers. Rich aroma of malt and grassy hop at first. Almost like a very rich lager. Except there is fruit present. Orange tinged gold color. White head, which left rather rapidly. Medium mouthfeel, a bit fizzy, and there is a slick feel for a moment. It finishes with some spice and bitter. There is a lot of fruit and spice in the middle. For me the fruit is stone fruit and orange. It is really very tasty, and it could be taken for a Belgian import.

Lots and lots of full pours at PP Belgian Fest on 3/24/07
I proudly proclaimed that I’d give this as high a score as the bottled version, upon trying it. But I think that was a bit of overzealousness caused by the moment and how incredibly good this stuff is. But, I can’t deny that the brett makes it a more enjoyable beer, with light tartness, more crispness and complexity and, in my mind, no drawbacks. The brett dosent dominate the beer, nor does it take away from the generous, but well-attenuated maltiness and clean, elegant, plastery-like saccharomyces nuances.
The appearance is similar to the bottled version, almost identical, of course, but for the much more controlled, smaller white head. Still a good bit of it, with light lacing left behind on the glass and a high clarity in the blonde liquid.
I’ll just say that for my money, this is about as good as saccharomyces gets. Very light, clean esters are neither overly sharp or exuberantly fruity, but yield more pear/nectarine/grapeskin-like notes. In concert with the delicate honey notes collected from the malt, it’s one of the most elegant and understated aromas out there. Soft dough/plaster and very light vanilla sit on the end, further emphasizing the yeast. Minimal, peppery and grassy hops show only light aromatics and no bitterness, as an abbey singel should. Tough to put in to words such an understated, reserved beer, and for most, it will just come off as "too light" or "weak". Not in my opinion, that’s for sure.
Terrific balance is foremost its greatest factor in the flavor, possibly tied with drinkability. Very slightly chewy malt adds almost a wheat-like consistency and gives light vanilla, cream and lemon notes through the middle, that give quite a bit of flavor, for the beer’s size. A flavor that I can only describe as rose water, or some type of floral-infused spring water, with a touch of pearskin, hangs about as well, climaxing on the finish, along with a pinch of nuttiness and light grain. Divinely clean with just a pinch of spicy phenolics on the end. Light carbonation, very strong texture for its size. Delicious and the best session beer on the market, IMHO. A lot of craftmanship to see here, if you take your time with it (or drink 5 or 6 glasses of it). Repeat after me, "Quality, not Quantity."

tap at the brewpub - Wow, I’m curious about the rating on this one. People saw something that I missed in my sampler, I guess. Could it be better in the bottle than on tap? That would be odd. It’s mildly sweet and I really didn’t have much to say about it as it seems like there’s not a lot going on with this beer. It smells pretty good and it’s refreshing as a session beer, but that’s about it. Maybe I’ll be able to try it again sometime.

On tap at RR in Santa Rosa. Gold with a small white head. Hoppy-fruity aroma with citrus notes. Taste is nice and hoppy with a nice bitter finish.

Draft. Amber color with a thin white head. Big carbonation. Aroma of yeast - some banana and clove. The aroma is great - too bad the taste doesn’t quite match it. There’s some malt, some citrus (lemon), and a little yeast, but I agree below with this is half Belgian and half American. It’s just not quite there.

Golden colour, with no particular effervescence. Fruity aroma - apples and pears. Light background malt. Sweet and fruity starter beer, not really any more Belgian nor unusual than Alexander Keith’s.
