Hearty malts meld with a subtle balance of hops to create a dark and nurturing ale of comfort and complexity. Hints of bittersweet chocolate and espresso fill the tongue, finishing with just a touch of smoke. Not too sweet or filling, this versatile dark ale dissuades the notion that a darker beer is a stronger beer. Five varieties of roasted malts are the source of Porter’s dark color and rich taste, while two varieties of hops bring a mellow bite to this deep toasty ale.
Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer, the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling

Pours pitch black with a small foamy head. Aroma has notes of licorice, roasted malts and coffee. Taste is quite roasty with notes of chocolate, coffee and licorice. Slightly sweet and bitter finish. Well balanced, enjoyable porter.

Overall this is a very good porter, black with an off white to tan head, aroma and taste are what you’d expect from a porter, roasted malts with a little dark fruit and coffee. Nothing off putting, but nothing really outstanding either.

Purchased at Breeze Thru Liquors in Milwaukee, WI; enjoyed on the first day of meteorological summer! Appearance virtually pitch black with a thin tan head. Aroma is subtle, a touch of roasted malt with a bit of citrus hops. Taste is beautiful. Starts off a bit bitter from the hops, then the chocolate kicks in with a touch of smokiness/ash from the espresso. There is a definite coffee presence in this one, also a bit of citrus from the hops. The carbonation level is good, rather smooth, very flavorful. Definitely enjoyable!

355 ml bottle, as Southern Tier Porter Dark, at Plan B, Copenhagen. Black colour, huge beige head. Lovely vinous and fruity aroma, notes of American hops and orange marmalade. The roasty notes are very subdued. The flavour is very moderately roasty, notes of chocolate and moderate American hops, not very sweet. Decent beer.

8/24/2009 I picked this up on a recent trip to NY with the family. Pours a clear dark brown with a bubbly off white head that dissipates rather quickly. Smells of milk chocolate, some citrus hops, slight roasty aroma as well as a slight alcohol nose. The aroma reminds a little of chokolat only on a smaller scale. There’s a slight phenolic in the nose I pick up once or twice. Taste is a straight forward porter with a fairly dry finish. Lots of chocolate and roast flavor. Slight citrus hop bitterness tries to find a voice, but never manages to get through the roasty malts. A touch of alcohol in there as well. Creamy/oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation, medium to thin body. I really enjoyed this one. Great sessionable Porter.

Herb-muffiger Malzantrunk mit trockenen Röstnoten. Im Mittelteil dazu modrig, noch trockener. Die Schokoladenmalzigkeit kommt so kaum zur Geltung. Trockener Abgang, monoton. 7/8/6/8/7/7
