Aroma of malt, caramel, nuts, fruity notes, hints of spices, hops. Flavour is light sweet with a long bitter finish. Malty and hoppy winter ale, much more to my liking than those Belgian spicy sugar-bombs.

Bottle. Amber color. Caramel in the spicy aroma. Malty sweet, spicy flavor with caramel, cardemom and speculaas. Sticky mouthfeel. Questionable balance.

12 oz bottle from De Bierkoning @ home. Deep ruby red color with a slight haze. Rocky light beige head with pretty good retention and lacing. Aroma’s: resinous hops, caramel malts, light red fruit. Fruit is much more upfront retronasal, with the resin still quite strong and caramel more subdued. Flavor is moderate bitter, light fruity sourness, light caramel sweetness. Medium bodied. Long finish with herbal and earthy bitterness.

Bottle from Boise Co-op. Pours out a ruby tinged gold, with sparse head, yet leaves copious amounts of spotty lacing. Malt drives the aroma and taste, backup support comes from hops, spice and a bit of alcohol warmth. It all comes together quite nicely for a winter warmer.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear deep amber with a tan head that dissipates completely. Aroma has a nice sweet grain and spice combination with a bit of caramel underlying. Flavor has a combination of hrass, sweet grains and light spice with a hint of toffee supporting.

Bottle Deep amber witha lively coarse head Lots of woody sharp bitter aroma and flavors notes. Astringent and the ABV is noticable. Bitterness was somewhat rye-like.

355ml bottle. Clear dark amber colour with small to average, dense, fluffy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Sweaty, resinous hoppy aroma is supported by malty toffee and caramel notes. Taste is dry hoppy, slightly piney and resinous, a touch of candied orange zest, nuttily malty basis, some caramel and toffee; not without watery stages. Kind of diluted Barley Wine; or, to contribute another facet to a well-kept legend, this is how the passage-surviving, stronger brewed and hopped beers would have tasted like, if the colonialists actually had them watered down as originally intended.
