Imperial Porter as dark and bitter as mid winter - and as full-bodied and inspiring as the return of the sun. Brewed from grain and oats with innumerable types of malt, conjuring tangible tones of chocolate and caramel. Goes perfectly with Christmas dinner desserts, and ideal for laying down for a few years.

330ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours a very dark brown with a small dark brown head that fades quickly. Nose is vanilla, dark fruits, caramel, coffee, chocolate and sweet malts. taste is quite sweet with the vanilla and caramel leading the more bitter coffee and chocolate. Body is a bit light for a porter with soft carbonation. Oily mouth with a lingering bitterness. Complex and tasty.

Bottle @ Systembolaget. 2012 vintage. Cellared properly in rotbox conditions for about 1.2 years, Pours black with a big nice-looking blackish beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. smell is malty with heavily roasted malts, salty liquorice candy, burnt wood, caramel, burnt cookies, pine needles, grapefruit rinds, dark roast coffee, resin and hay. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, malty and earthy with roasted malts, burnt caramel, charred wood, dried pine needles, salty liquorice candy, alcohol, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, lemon zest, hay, resin, moist soil and toffee. Mouthfeel is soft, velvety, tiny roasted astringent, tiny boozy and near full bodied. Finish is bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel salty liquorice candy, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, burnt cookies, resinous wood, soil and dried pine needles. Quite tasty...

Lots of roast malt with a good dose of bitter chocolate and a light note of rust. Creamy, thick texture with low carbonation. Pours black with mocha head and lacing. Bitter finish with a little caramel sweetness. Turns a little sour on the long term aftertaste. Bottle from lick-bough.

Single bottle from the LCBO. Pours a real dark brown colour with a mocha head, good retention and small lace. Aromas of roasted malts, dark fruits (plums), vanilla and other sweet malts. Smooth mouthfeel with well-hidden alcohol and no burning at all. The flavours are not as sweet as expected. More on the mild bitter side with the coffee, grassy hops and dark chocolate. Dark fruits are light as well, with some yeast. A nice dryness overall, but missing some character (strength).

330mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose brings out notes of cocoa, a little roast, and almost some wintery spices. Flavour is similar, bringing out dark fruits, cocoa, and some slightly spicy notes a la Xmas spices. Not a typical porter by any means, with the wintery spices in there. Pretty well-balanced and unique. Good stuff.
