Imperial Porter as dark and bitter as mid winter - and as full-bodied and inspiring as the return of the sun. Brewed from grain and oats with innumerable types of malt, conjuring tangible tones of chocolate and caramel. Goes perfectly with Christmas dinner desserts, and ideal for laying down for a few years.

(Bottle) Black colour with lasting, rocky, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, dried fruit (figs, raisins), liquorice, black rye bread and hints of orange peel. Malty, roasted taste with notes of black coffee, dark chocolate, cacao, liquorice, black rye bread, dark fruit, some vanilla sweetness, hits of burnt sugar and a generous coffee bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Not quite as powerful as the stronger 2011 version, but a bit more balanced, actually in excellent balance. Lovely beer.

Bottle from trade with Cunningham, many thanks. Almost black color with huge beige head. Nice strong coffee, roasted malt aroma. Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, plums in taste. Alcohol is evident, but not in disturbing way. Long coffee bitter finish. Tasty.

Oh she’s a dark beer, she is. Nearly non-existent tan head (might have been too gentle on the pour.) Nose of sweet maple, raisins and malt. Big taste of both sweetness with a bitterness closely following and then hanging around up in the aftertaste to balance things out. Flavours of burn malt, raisins, some hay. Carbonation is very crisp on the palate. Not a bad beer, but the harshness of the aftertaste is going to reduce points on this one. Edit after 5 minutes... Funny how we can be rather critical. After sipping this beer for a few minutes it smoothed out quite a bit. I’m going to up my score. And mention it has a nice molasses flavour to the aftertaste.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some black chocolate notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by some roasted malt with light dry coffee notes and some black chocolate notes. Body is quite full with nice creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Easily drinkable for the style with just enough complexity to be interesting.
