This amplified version of Sprang, our hoppy welcome to Spring, is a kölsch inspired ale, cool fermented and dosed heavily with Nelson Sauvin. Lower fermentation temperature slows the yeast's metabolism and provides balance by gently subduing super-fruity esters and spicy phenols. Big Sprang is medium bodied with dank aromatics of earthy evergreen, passion fruit, and faint doughy malt. Flavors of juicy concord grape, mango, and herbaceous white wine interweave with cracker-crisp, pilsner malt character and minimal bitterness. The finish is dry with a lasting touch of grain.

STYLE: Kölsch Inspired Ale

Can pour into nonic pint glass from the brewery. Appearance is cloudy yellow-light brown with a few floaties, decent sparkle (though hard to see), finger-width fizzy white head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is citrus, mild tropical and tart fruit, yeast. Taste is tart fruit, citrus, melon-grape, spicy. Palate is light bodied with thin texture, mild alcohol warmth, soft-to-average carbonation and mostly sweet melon-grape finish. Overall, very nice and I can see it is Kolsch inspired but those looking for a very good traditional Kolsch may be disappointed.

Can at Craft CG share - big thanks to LKS! It pours cloudy yellow - gold with a medium white head. The aroma is fresh, green, creamy, milky, stone fruits, fruit smooth and doughy bread. The taste is soft, dry, green, grassy, weedy, touch of spice, doughy, floury white bread, spice, touch of alcohol and sweet stone fruits. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not sure I would clock this as a kolsch, bit it's a nice beer nontheless. Rounded and chuggable.

16oz can pours a lightly hazy but mostly clear gold with some wispy, white head. Nose is grassy, lemony, gristy, soap. A little flinty too. Flavor is grassy, gristy, lemon, green grape. Dry, zippy finish. Very good, but certainly not a Kolsch.

16oz can at the May 2018 DC RB Tasting. Poured a hazy pale yellow color with a medium sized whte head. Aroma was lots of citrus notes, light yeast. Favor was crisp malts, juicy hop notes. Like the base beer, not at all like a Kolsch, but pretty tasty. Light citrus. Pleasant.

From a 16 oz can at the RB gathering in May 2018. Pours a hazy pale gold with an off white head. Aroma of tropical fruit. Flavors are moderate sweet lactose and moderate bitter citrus. Complex but not recognizable as a Kolsch.

Can split at CBC Gilesborn, thanks to Leighton, 25/04/18. Hazed golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is pine needle, grass, melon, tangerine. Taste comprises pithy citric shreds, light breads, pineapple, grapefruit dance, pine, straw. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close sprayed with juiyc hop bitterness. Solid offering but pretty much an IPA and shouldn't ride at the top of the Kolsch list !!!

Can shared in London - huge thanks to colleague Jonny for hooking it up. Pours mostly clear gold with a foamy, white head. The nose holds pithy lemon, peach, dry pale bread. Light to medium sweet flavour with more dry pale malts, pithy grapefruit, biscuits, lemon, straw. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Balanced finish, more pithy citrus, pale bread, low bitterness. Super drinkable. Really fun stuff.

About as close to a Kolsch as I am to being cast as Superman in the next cinematic Justice League clusterfuck, but it's pretty friggin' tasty, so we'll let it slide. Super juicy Trillium hops dominate, with lovely vinous white grape and passion fruit notes backed by a mild grassy/floral undertone and firm cracker malts. Again, nothing in this pint reads kolsch, but it kills on a drinkabiility scale. Tasty.
