The gods of lore were a wild bunch. War, bacchanalia, weird family stuff, it was a lot. But then there’s our buddy Hephaestus, and he mostly stuck to the forge. We see him here in his element, hammering away on what will surely become the shield or breastplate of some mighty warrior, all while The Artist goads him on from the peanut gallery.
Hephaestus is our ode to the God of the Forge, who kept to himself and wiled away the days forging the weapons and armor that his fellow gods donned for their epic clashes.
This Russian Imperial Stout leans on a varied malt bill of chocolate malt, Mesquite-smoked malt, and flaked oats for a hefty base of dark and roasted flavor. Aged in Bourbon barrels, with espresso from Barrington Roasting Co. added, Hephaestus is a beer where strength meets strength, and iron sharpens iron.

I appreciate what Clown Shoes does with imperial stouts and I have been to Hay Market. Good possibilities here. A stovepipe can purchased at The Cellar, my friends in helping me survive the times. I’ve opened the can and am pouring into my Cowtown snifter. I see a jet black body and a creamy skim of tan foam. The scent, nice, molasses and chocolate. And the taste, nice also. Semisweet chocolate, raspberry, black licorice, some alcohol influence. A little too warm outside for an imperial stout but I have to say I am enjoying this.

Can from Corti Bros. Pours dark brn/blk with a creamy tan head. Mixed bourbon/coffee aroma with some cacao. Full bodied. Flavor is thick burnt malt, with bourbon following, then lots of espresso and intense cacao. Not dry, but not very sticky. Bourbon, heat and burnt malt give some bitterness. Tasty. Deadly.

Bottle thanks to Chow. Pours very dark brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, vanilla, wood, bourbon. Thick mouth, chewy, roast, vanilla, bourbon, dark chocolate, bitter finish, very good.
