Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); best malted barley and a generous amount of choicest aroma hops; fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create an exceptionally full-flavoured complex ale with an abundance of maltiness and fruity hop character. The label on the bottle is based on Samuel Smith’s Victorian letterhead when the brewery was a contractor to Her Majesty Queen Victoria’s forces.

50cl bottle from AbeerVinum, Rimini, Italy. Pours red amber, clear, with fine whitish foam. Aroma is malty and caramel, and also a little earthy. Body and carbonation are average. Taste is medium sweet, with just a hint of bitterness. Final is average.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours a clear amber with small nice lasting white head with decent lacing. Aroma of orange pith and zest with caramel and herbs. Taste of caramel, lightly burnt toast, citrus zest and pith, spice. Sweet middle but good long bitterness. Medium bodied, quite smooth. A very good traditional English ale although the pasteurisation has made it a little too clean and hollow in the finish. Plenty of flavour in the middle of this beer though.

Panda at home, thanks to Graham Grumbo, 13/11/24. Beer #86 ... very much a catch up rake as had the odd bottle of this when I first moved to London in the couple of SS pubes I occasionally frequented. Almost clear golden amber topped with an off white cap that soon thins leaving a little edge work. Nose is dull fruits, biscuit, caramel, earthy, dusty hop. Taste comprises caramel, biscuit, fruit loaf, earthy tones, damp straw, nettles, light herb. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Passable affair.

9/11/2024. Bottle from Beautiful Beers, Bury St Edmunds. Pours clear dark orange amber with a small frothy off-white head. Aroma is caramel, biscuit, citrus, malty, grains, old hops, sweaty resin hints. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Moderate body, slightly watery, average carbonation. Drying finish. Okay.
