Dark Island is an iconic beer: The Orkney Brewery's flagship beer. Exhibiting a ripe fruity, chocolate nose, Dark Island is balanced by flavours of dark Chocolate, dried fruit, figs and nuts from the combination of roasted malts and rich hops. A standard-bearer for traditional Scottish ales.

Aroma of dark fruits and chocolate. Taste of roasted malt, slightly sweet, some dark fruits, with medium bitterness and dark chocolate finish.

Cask at Bon Accord in Glasgow. Very dark brown with medium head. Nutty aroma with some prunes and coffee. Roasted malty taste also with prunes and coffee.

Bottle. Dark brown, tanned foam. Lightly sour roast grain, medium light body, umami, Maggi. Dry roast, pumpernickel finish. Not the biggest fan.

Yet another beer I’m surprised I haven’t rated before. Cask at Smithfield Derby – but have drunk it elsewhere several times. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with minimal off-white head. There’s malts in the aroma plus a hint of humbug sweets. Pretty much the same in the mouth with the addition of liquorice and traces of treacle, berries and coffee. Finish has some vague fruitiness. Not at all bad.

Deep dark brown with a ruby tinge, a frothy tan head and a sweet fruit malt and slightly nutty aroma. Smooth and slightly bitter with some coffee notes alongside the fruit malt flavour and a dry finish

Bottle: Poured a dark brown with amber edges, head is creamy/frothy beige. Aroma is fruity, bubblegum, malty, dark fruits, figs. Taste is bitter, rich malts, toffee, light coffee, dried dark fruits, figs, yeast esters, drying finish.

Tight tan head stayed on a still black body. Toffee, malt & fruity aroma. Medium bodied, tingly with a clean back. Malt, nutty, roasted & toffee tastes with a fruity berry finish. Great pint.

Cask pint at the Halfway House. Black pour with a light beige creamy head. Light roasty aroma. Taste is roasty, burnt toast, and chocolate. Creamy and smooth, full feel.
