On tap. Pours black and opaque with a dense brown head. Distincy sweetish and roasted malt aroma with a licorice touch. Medium body, again dry licorice-like malts with a whiff of ashes and smoke. Finishes dry. Very pleasant. 020911

From tap at MikkellerBar. Pours pitch black with a huge, dense, creamy and chocolate dark brown. Aroma is roasted dark malt, chocolate and bread. Dark chocolate. Mild smoked, light tarish and dark malty to chocolate. Bitter, dark malty and slight smoked finish.

Draft @ Al’s Of Hampden, Enola, PA. Pours a black color with a tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate and coffee aroma. Roasted malty chocoalte and coffee flavor. Has a roasted malty bitter chocolate finish.

Draft. A black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, soy sauce, wood, and a burnt edge. The flavor is sweet with notes of bread, roasted malt, brown sugar, soy sauce, and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish.

Tap @ Bocktown in Pittsburgh. Comes to me completely black, it is thick looking. Aroma is a prune-y thick and some mineral qualities. Taste has a little bit of light chocolate and the mineral part is stronger. There is a little bit of that light watery prune in there as well. Basic comment, it was a very mineral type of stout.

One of the nicest pours I’ve seen. On tap at the Bocktown Bar in the Robinson Township shopping complex. Thick and very dark black with a dark brown head. The head looks like whipped creamy chocolate pudding. Smell is an intense roasted wood aroma. I’ve never seen a head like this. Is there such a thing as roasted imperial stout? Very strong burnt flavor like it was aged in burnt wooden barrels. I was thinking this was an imperial stout because I don’t particularly care for imp stouts but it is only a ’stout’. Perhaps a little too much for me. Long lasting burnt bitter malty/hoppy flavor finish. If you like imperial stouts, you better seek this out.

Cask version at Barley’s 4th Annual Mini RAF (05/13/06): Pours matte black with a medium thick and rocky dark beige head. Thin, spotty lacing. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Rich and creamy body with a good mix of bitter coffee and chocolate flavors. There is also a nice roasty presence throughout. The finish is smooth with a lightly bitter coffee aftertaste. Pretty well done.

Draught pint at Moan and Dove on 2/19/06 with Muzzlehatch. Deep tan-mahogany with light auburn tresses, seemingly opaque with a fair amount of tan head, wispy and only retained at cover, with little to no lacing. Straight up coffee, molasses, light black malts and only a touch of hops in the nose. Mostly sticky caramel intertwined with light coffee dryness. The flavor shows a dry bit of bakers chocolate and scorched coffee, offsetting a reservedly creamy-sweet vanilla-caramel, with light bitter notes of molasses and just a smattering of leafy, floral hops. As it warms, a smooth chocolate malt flavor emerges, but the vanilla/butter cream flavor remains. Medium body at best, moderate carbonation, slightly watery texture, no alcohol apparent, no yeast apparent.

This is probably the most impressive beer I have had from this company, and it is even in a style I do not care much for. Sampled on draft at the State College beer festival this beer pours a dark brown color with a small brown head. The aroma is strong bakers chocolate. The flavor is strong bitter coffee and a hint of chocolate. Very bitter.
