Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.
As testimony to its remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

75cl bottle courtesy of Belgbeergeek @ Belgian RB Gathering of Ultimate Evil. Cuivré opaque, col beige crémeux moyen. Arôme, malt caramel, sucre candi avec le profile boisé de chêne français ressortant bien et allant vers des notes de fruits rouges/noirs, qcq épices boisées. Palais fruité noire avec de suite ce profile de chêne français qui est bien en avant, le tout couplé avec cette impression de fruité rouge de vin en barrique qui est très appréciable au palais. Note aussi un côté malté caramel, toffee et doux de sucre candi. Reste belge dans l’approche avec l’ajout intéressant de la barrique de chêne. Au final, l’ajout chêne, surtout de ce profile distinct du chêne français, donne un profile assez monodimensionnelle qui l’emporte un peu sur le reste de la bière.

Bedankt Belgbeergeek. 75 cl. fles gedeeld met Belgbeergeek & Sebletitje @ Belgian Ratebeer Winter Gathering of Ultimate Evil. Unibroue blijft een interessante brouwerij voor mij, hun bieren vind ik wel over het algemeen goed en interessant maar ik vind het onmogelijk om wat zij doen Belgisch te noemen, geïnspireerd misschien maar ook niet volledig, origineel vind hen wel. Fin du Monde is bevoordeeld hoe ik het ook niet bekijk een hefe een geen tripel wat ik denk de bedoeling was. In tegenstelling tot Belgische bieren kunnen hun bieren echt niet oud worden wat wel de bedoeling is denk ik. Ik geniet gewoonlijk wel van hun spul maar ik denk niet dat ik extra moeite zal doen om eraan te geraken. Dit is bevoordeeld heel goed en origineel maar een quad is het niet maar dat hoeft dit ook niet te zijn voor mij, ik denk dat het vooral een kwestie is van hoe ik denk dat zij zich profileren als brouwerij. Donker rood amber, gebruinde kraag. Ruikt naar brood, zoet gerookt, hout in de zin van gewoon bomen, lichte soja / vlees ding, lichte zoete karamel, donker fruit. Smaak is zoet gerookt, soja, lichtjes gerookte mout, veel zoet hout wat blijkbaar franse eik is, melkchocolade, donker fruit en was brood. Toets minder koolzuurgas dan gewoonlijk … overal heerlijk.

Taste: Caramel, toasted malts, bready, oak, spices with a dry finish

750 ml corked and caged bottle. Pours clear mahogany in the light with a cream-colored lacy head with good retention. Aroma is peppery with a touch of clove. Taste is clovey, peppery, very Belgian and Trappist-like; sweet with umami and a dry slightly tart finish. I’m not getting any oak. Carbonation is fairly soft with a full body. Excellent.

Aroma: The nose is heavy malty, with sweet malts, raisins, caramel/toffee, alcohol, and spice
Appearance: It pours a murky reddish-brown color with a fizzy beige head and light lace
Flavor: The taste is medium-heavy sweet, heavy malty, with a little spice, and a little alcohol
Palate: The body is medium, it is a little syrupy on the mouth, with a sticky and slightly hot finish
Overall Impression: Interesting offering, with some nice complexity. It would probably improve with some age, but at this point it is a touch to syrupy, a touch too boozy, and a touch too sweet. With some age, all those parts may round out, but at this point I can't say that for sure. Definitely worth trying, but probably should be aged for peak performance.

Bottle - Yeasty alcohol and rich red fruits. Cloudy brown with a head that dissapears pretty quick. Sweet malts with that yeast and alcohol on the finish. Although this yeast profile is not my favorite this is a very well balanced beer that I quite enjoyed. A very nice after dinner beer to be enjoyed with a group.

Reddish brown colour, off-white head. Aroma of wood, fresh oak, vanilla, light spice, somewhat sweet malts. Wood flavour, sweet malts, caramel and barley. Finish wood and spices, some lingering sweetness.

750 mL bottle, 2011 bottling. Pours a darkish caramel color with a yellowy head. Apple aroma followed by cloves, bubble gum, other spices. Red apple, clove, caramel flavors, raisin, with Unibroue’s usual yeast, hints at and molasses, cocoa, anise. Has a nice full palate and a dry finish. Quite a tasty strong dark ale here.
