Bourbon Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout

Pitch black in color with a faint tan head that immediately identifies this beer as BIG. Aromas of dark fruits, chocolate, caramel and roast also make it even bigger. Roasted coffee and fruity chocolate notes are just the beginning of this stout's complex flavor. If this is wrong we don't want to be right.

Bottle, Boise imperial stout tasting. My first taste of the night, this was a solid opener. Near black pour and small brown head. Nose is bourbon, espresso, and chocolate malt. Heavy roast and espresso, lighter in vanilla and some bourbon. It hints at woody, but overall very smooth.

12 oz bottle from xdtfx. Nose is vanilla, chocolate, oak, roast, and a hint of molasses. Black with a medium cinnamon tan head. Flavor is lightly sweet and peppery with a hint of char along with the aromas present in the nose.

2012 bottle grey wax thanks to Tom. Pours black with beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is roast, wood, vanilla, bourbon. Slick mouthfeel, dark chocolate, wood, vanilla, roast, lingering bitterness, very impressive.

2014. Thanks, ineedbeer. The beer is wall to wall black with a small light brown head. The bubbles fade to a ring after a couple minutes. The aroma is silky chocolate milk. Big vanilla. Plenty of caramel in the background. Mild oak. Medium bourbon, sweet and rich. Some booze. The taste is sweet with milk chocolate and vanilla. Mild roast. Creamy full flavor. Medium to moderate bitterness in the finish. Smooth mouthfeel. Very easy to drink for a big barrel-aged stout. Tasty stuff.

Bottle (2013) at Coppertail Brewing during the RBWG 2015 Grand Tasting. Black with tan head. Aromas of bourbon, coconut, chocolate, toasty oak. Tastes of dark chocolate, caramel, bourbon. Full body with a dry finish.

2012 bottle.
This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was basically a pure jet black color with barely any head and left some splotches of light lacing.
The smell was mainly sweet chocolate with a light roast. Light coffee surrounded a gentle woodiness. Bourbon never really reared it’s head.
The taste was basically the same leading into a mostly roasty quality of aftertaste and a semi - dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a good sipping quality about it. Carbonation was barely there but I’m not worried since it was a 2012 bottle.
Overall, I say for the year of the bottle everything was pretty smoothed out and balanced with lack of bourbon. I bet if I would have had it fresher I would have noticed the bourbon. Still, a mostly good beer.

Sample at the Badge-Whore Bowl (OSU vs AL) tasting on 01/01/2015. This brew pours a dark brown-black color with a very thin beige head that disappears quickly. Spots of lacing on the glass. Oaky bourbon aroma with some vanilla notes. Rich body with with a rich bourbon character that has wood and vanilla notes. Sweet malt in the background as well. The finish is somewhat boozy with a dark malty aftertaste. Good beer overall.
