Roast barley and chocolate and crystal malts combine to give the ale a deep deep ruby colour and sweet mocha and toast flavour. A little oats in the mash help to provide a smoothness and late Fuggles hops create a resinous balance. It ferments out fairly dry and the end result is a sturdy, powerful and smooth ale not to be rushed at.

Very dark brown, dense white head, light lacing
Aroma of soft roasted malt, some dark sweet fruits
Taste of roasted malts, touch of yeast, soft burnt notes, some dark fruit malts, sticky dark fruits, bit smoky, quite complex, but not a big fan of the flavour
Palate - Medium body, quite sticky, ligth sweet, more bitter. FInish a bit dry.
Overall - It’s well made, but I found it a bit hard going tbh

Pours a dark brown almost black colour with a plum purple tinge, a loose frothy beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, some hops and smokiness, a bit subdued. A bitter roasted malt, ashy taste, and long bitter finish.

Cask at the Crosse Keys (JDW), City of London. Deep reddish chestnut with a loose beige head; rich chocolate malt aroma; smooth, with a an initial bitter chocolate taste, then changing to a sweeter milk chocolate; and a lasting dry finish. A rather good winter Porter.

Clear dark purple brown beer, creamy beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: hay, stable, malty, cow fodder, some caramel. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter start, roasted, dark caramel, little sweet, pretty hoppy. Aftertaste: dark chocolate, cocoa powder, hop bitterness.

Bottle at home shared with mates at Christmas dinner. Aroma is powdered choc, dark dried fruits, cranberry, malty. Clear brown coloured pour with a thin cream head. Flavour is bitter dark malt, powdered chic, nutty, long lingering bitter roast. Moderate to high carbonation. OK.

Bottle. Beer Central, Sheffield. Clear, dark copper colour. Messy, thin, sticky, off white head. Light smoke. Bit of bonfire toffee. Light chocolate malts. Taste is dry, and light bitter. Palate is a little watery. Finishes ashy dry, and light, fruity bitter.

Bottle from Deliciously Different. Dark brown/black colour, beige foam. Soft carbonation. Very smooth to drink. Aroma of roasted malts with coffee and dark chocolate. Easy drinkable and very tastefull. Good porter!

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Thought this might bring back memories of drinking in firkin pubs in the mid-to-late 90s.... it didn’t... but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Dark brown pour, no head. Aromas of toast and raisins. Taste is strangely thin, but had more roast notes and toffee. Nice to have tried again.
