375ml bottle, believed to be 1986. Cork split in 2 but was retrieved intact. Opened with a pop! To celebrate/commiserate the life of Ratebeer. It pours crystal clear copper with a small, bubbly white head (sediment left in bottle). The aroma is musty, gooseberry, white grape, lemon - lime, mouldy citrus, melon, damp wood, deep funk, barnyard, damp basement vibes, dunnage warehouse, discarded apple core, kitty litter, faintly medicinal and earth. The taste is firmly dry initially, oily, slick, nice puckering sourness, sherbet, lemon - lime, tart gooseberry, white currant, must, muted white wine vinegar, dull acidity, dry oak, tannin, clay, touch of leather, earth, funk, barnyard and leather with a drying finale. Medium body, limited carbonation (but not flat) and fairly oily in the mouth. A lovely slice of history. I was worried this would have had artificial sweetener vibes, but it doesn't. Very limited oxidation either. Has aged gracefully and is way more enjoyable than expected. Not just got science. The sort of beer I loved to chase in my peak RB days.

75 cl. bottle sampled @ Kraddel does 1K tasting. Procured by Kraddel. Cheers. Unknown Vintage – no indication of date on the bottle. Looks quite old – 1980s origin maybe? Cork is completely rotten through, blackened, crumbling apart entirely. Some filthy gunk on the bottle. I thought that all of the Eylenbosch beers were sweetened and pasteurized but this tasted like the real deal, wonderful surprise. Decanted the bottle – ridiculously murky overripe peach amber with a creamy white head. Surprised how much great carb. here. Nose is wow, so sour, incredible surprise, I am even getting acetone in the nose, big tart, vinegar, lots of fruits, musty,… Taste is big sourness, peaches, orange peel, vinegar, toffee, tart, light herbs, touch bitter herbs, lots of musty cellar in the best way imaginable, citrus, bitter barn, some citrus burn in the back of the throat. Thick very creamy body. Wonderful – wowza. This is a incredible geuze and beer. Far better than SΓ©lection Lambic.

EPIC ! at my 1000th review tasting ! FUCKED UP CORK i pulled it out for 90 % ( in 15 pieces ) the rest kept stuck , with a hole in the middle wich we poured trough. it looked discusting. how old is this , even ? no sign of bottledate, anywhere.... looks orange, smells very sour. tastes very sour as well, combined with apples, and that ’dusty’ element ( this is at least 20 years old, so ... ) dont know what happened to the previous rated bottles ( were they even more fucked up ? ) cause this one was PHENOMENAL !

Mind you, my sample is of indeterminate age. A little bird tells me this still hails from Eylenbosch itself, not from the Keersmaecker factory. Warning 2: even in those days, 'Festival' was a filtered gueuze, not a bottle-conditioned one. It used to be more or less the best of the fake ones. Clear orange-amber. Fluffy dirty-white head, fast gone. Horseblanket, woody, cypress, citrussy, unripe berries as gooseberry or currants in the nose. Very tart taste - mouthpuckering so. Not a trace of oxidation (in a pH of maybe 2.5,...). Fresh lemony, woody-acid flavours. A little bit of licorice retronasal. Very refreshing, but not for the faint-hearted. Mouthfeel is were it fails. It's got the obligatory acidburn - and how - but an unfiltered gueuze would be flunkier, livelier, more interesting. Still quite good. As said, the best of 'the rest'.
