Zumbi was a Brazilian anti-imperialist hero. Like his attitude, our Zumbi presents a powerful complex character of coffee, dark chocolate, hazelnut, caramel and licorice wrapped in an extremely balanced black fluid that will drive your senses through a wind of bittersweet terrified emotions.

Bottle at home. Aroma is dark malt, caramel, chocolate, coffee, touch of dark fruits, bit nutty, raisins, sugary, some roast, light coffee and liquorice. Flavour is medium sweet with a little bitterness in the finish. Body is medium. A bit too Belgian to really impress me as an Imperial Porter. On the sugary sweet side. Fairly enjoyable beer though.

I spotted this bottle at an upscale liquor store in Colorado Springs, a White Pony beer? A no-brainer to purchase. The label shows a lot n. of 02/2015, gotta say. I have my New Belgium globe glass arrayed to catch the pour. Dark, very dark, black with perhaps some brown around the edges. The smallish head withers to a ring of small, light tan bubbles. The scent is chocolate with some hops lurking. The drink is all right, not quite what I hoped. Chocolate definitely, grain, licorice, malt, a touch of raspberry jam. The feel is really thin, for an imperial porter I thought there would be some presence. Oh well.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een zwart bruin bier met een dun schuim. Het heeft een gebrande moutige geur. De smaak is gebrand mout, koffie en licht bitter.

Bottle at home. Three year old. Pours a dark brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate cake, roasted malt, port, game meat, coffee beans, rubber and licorice. Roasted flavour with ash, cough drop, oak, leather, raisins and dark chocolate. Slightly astringent. Slick mouth feel, full-bodied and light to medium bitterness. Roasted and with phenols that creates an interesting imperial porter.

330 ml bottle into snifter, best before 11/11/2020. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, licorice, raisin, cherry, date, nuttiness, toasted dark/brown bread, light smoke/herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. A bit too fruity/yeasty, but not overwhelming. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of smoke, char, molasses, licorice, raisin, cherry, date, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, toasted dark/brown bread, light smoke/char, dark fruit, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Mildly warming alcohol for 9.4%. Overall this is an excellent English style imperial porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Not overly roasty/charred. Very rich malt complexity; restrained fruity yeast and balancing English earthy hops against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

At Brugs Bierfestival, 4 February 2018. Cheers to Anke & Pieter!

Cloudy black with a thin, off-white head. Aroma of apple, pear, caramel & licorice, nuts, bourbon, malt. Tastes medium malty/syrupy sweet and light hoppy bitter with hints of nuts; spicy, hoppy finish with warming bourbon or liqueur alcohol. Full body, slick/oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Too sweet? Drinkable indeed...
