Zumbi was a Brazilian anti-imperialist hero. Like his attitude, our Zumbi presents a powerful complex character of coffee, dark chocolate, hazelnut, caramel and licorice wrapped in an extremely balanced black fluid that will drive your senses through a wind of bittersweet terrified emotions.

Bottle at Brugge beer festival 2016, Brugge, Belgium. A black coloured pour with virtually no head to speak of. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes very similar, roasty, malty, chocolate. Not bad.

75 cl bottle. Black with brown foam, dissipates quickly leavinh no lacings. Aroma is interesting, with soft coffee notes, roasted malt, chocolate, also slight sour hints, red wine note, leather, minor alcohol. Taste is roasted malt with coffee, smoked sausage, licorice with some lingering alcohol, coffe and spices. Body a bit thin, low carbo.

Draught at BBF. Thick, creamy, pale beige, frothy head over a blackish beer with burgundy edges. Aroma of bitter chocolate, cured meat, candied date, dried banana, fig, burnt sugar, iron shavings. Soft, dryish umami onset, meaty with a restrained sweetish raisin touch and a hint of sourish blackberry deep underneath, smooth toasted and nutty maltiness, peppery hop bitterish touch in the end with some warming alcohol. Needs more sweetness, less of the iron effect and a more ’rounded’ body to truly shine as the imperial porter it is intended to be, but pleasant nonetheless.

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9.4%. Pitch black colour, hardly any carbonation, minimal beige head. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate, mild coffee, sherry and oak. The mouthfeel is quite a letdown because of the lack of carbonation. The flavour has a slightly fruity acidity on top of mild roasty notes. Not quite there.

Bottle Appellation Wines, Comely Bankers Draught tasting. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, nuts. Taste is hot, liquorice. Tarry finish. Ash misheard the name of this as Zumba, which is an image that will haunt me to the end of my days (may they be mercifully hastened).
