When the pilot batch for the spear was first made ten years ago, the ABV turned out exactly 6.66%. After being aged on toasted oak, the beer named itself. Stealing souls ever since with its malty, nutty taste, and long smooth finish.

On tap at Steamworks Mount Pleasant. Pours clear brown with an off-white head. Toasted nuts and brown sugar on the nose. Flavour has burnt dark sugars, toasted nuts, and some charred wood. Solid.

473 ml can. Pours a dark brown with full head. Aromas of earthy toasted malts, sweat, and plastic plus quite a bit of nondescript nuts. Flavors of same with emphasis on plastic and oak without balance. Not a drain pour and drinkable, but why? Time to up the game…

Light amber-brown. Thin head. Vague nuttiness but mostly sweet, with a touch of toffee.

On tap at 12 Kings, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a medium tan head. Aroma brings out lots of roasted nuts, with gentle cocoa, and some earthy notes. Flavour is robust, with lots of roasted nuts, a hint of burnt dark fruits, and a tiny hint of tartness. Robust and well-constructed. Finally something good from these guys.

Nitro pour at the fancy new brewery, good beige foam on top of a semi clear brown body. The aroma is all malt. Flavour is awkward malt, sweet alcohol, incongruous conjunctions jiving (kudos to me for typing that properly after 4 pints). Medium finish. Middle of the road and boring. I need a burger.

Draught at the brewery
Brown colour. Mild aroma, stale bread and light roasted malt. Soft mouthfeel, light caramel, still nothing that says "nut brown", light residual sweetness. Not as bad as Newcastle, but not exciting either.
