Alpha King's festive cousin. A big American Xmas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt, Mexican sugar and, of course, tons of strange American hops.

Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to English pint glass.
Appearance: super dark brown to almost black in color with a three finger tan foamy head which slid off delicately to leave some light lace.
Aroma: huge amounts of coffee - roasted, sweet and earthy fluctuate through some milk chocolate sweetness and some light wafery-like substances; earthy hoppiness underneath
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas pretty nicely with an added sugary tone to it; mild aftertaste of milk chocolate and coffee
Texture: medium bodied, leaning towards being a sipper but there's an ever so light possibility of being able to slam this one too. Pretty smooth along the tongue; finishes chocolatey and coffee toned
Overall: pretty nicely done porter I would be willing to have again.

Pour is a black with a large tan head. Aroma is roasty malt with a little herbal hop. Flavor is more roasted and charred malt with some bitter bakers chocolate and more of those herbal hops notes. One of the more hoppy porters I've ever had.

Notes from 3/21/2008. A pretty light-hearted pour into my favorite Ommegang chalice. Dark & ruby-hued, I've seen it before. The tan head barely makes its presence known, & there is no lace to speak of. A little more viscous then I would of thought, but it's only my eyes. They lie all the time. First off, the chocolate is very obvious. More straight up sugar then caramel, with a pleasant flowery bitterness rounding the scent out. A little simple, honestly enticing. I couldn't sense any alcohol. Unsweetened chocolate, with a heavy measure of refined sugar, & a little butter to give it that greasy feel, it's almost like drinking fresh coco if you couldn't differentiate much between hot & cold. :P The bitterness is more assertive then hot coco, but because grandma never really made it with enough sugar(preferring to just drop the block of chocolate into the pot & get back to her novelas), it is strikingly similar. Coffee & nutty notes are subtle, but add slight complexity. Childhood memories begin to saturate my brain, but the alcohol isn't far behind. Carbonation is strong, with the feel being greasy, but the body is moderately light & very fluid. Someone send me a growler of this stuff next season. Too easy. :)

Panda at home, thanks to the Wingmane, 19/12/23. Lighter shade of black with a lasting khaki head. Nose is chocolate, mellow hops, almost CDA like, charr, toffee, dried red berries. Taste comprises dark malts, chocolate, spice, light roast, dried fruit rinds, toffee, brown sugar dusting, fruit slice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light roasted balance and hint of hops. Tidy flavoursome porter.

Draught @ Franklin Tap, Chicago (Nov 2023). Dark brown with ruby red highlights, large foamy tan head, faint coffee aroma, high carbonation, bitter coffee beans taste with faint chocolate flavor, thin body, long bitter finish. Satisfying porter.
