Huge thanks to Eyedrinkale. I still can’t believe I got the chance to try this one.
Bottled 2004 says the cork but I’m not sure which batch it was.
Shared this with EDA on 8/5/05. Pour is darker than usual for a cantillon lambic, quite hazy as well. It’s got sort of a very ripe orange-peach color, but also a tinge of kiwi-skin (sort of a drab brownish-olive-orange). In the aroma, there are all sorts of funky things to be found. Moldy barns, wet, farmy hay and sour acids. Lactic notes, but a good hint of something sweet as well. Really quite strong and forceful, though I can’t say I find anything in the aroma that would suggest cognac. The flavor begins with a huge sourness and tons of acid. It’s got a big body, full of light malt (light and moderately sugary/sweet), abundant wheat and dry, earthy notes. Lots of bacteria in this stuff, it’s all over the place, from cheesy, to farmy and then on to musty. Really pleasing, and just the slightest hint of effervescence to tickle the throat as it glides down. In wonderful condition. The finish shows a touch of sugariness, then a dry, almost peaty/smoke note with sharp alcohol, but it is quite faint and I can barely make the connection with cognac when trying. I would never notice cognac having tasted this blind. Tartness really grows and a pleasant wet woodiness sits in. Unlike the Cantillon Gueuze, with much more focus on earthy/woody notes and much more of a lean towards tartness than sourness, as Jeppe points out. I also found the body bigger, more sweet (which was a really enjoyable, as you don’t get that much in Cantillon) and just more rounded and drinkable. Kind of like the dark saison of lambics. A great example, really puts the 2003 bottles of Grand Bruocsela to shame, IMHO. I don’t know about that cognac though, must have disappeared with the aging. Thanks again, Mike!

Bottle, 750 at the brewery. 2012 vintage. Cloudy golden with white head. Bit vinous, wood, musty, bitterish finish. Some cognac notes. Nice complexity.

2020 bottle. Clear gold, a wisp of white head is very soon gone. Aroma of old lemons, crackers, the barn, apple box, brooding grapey oak, glacé pineapple. A fair bit of body and not bone dry. Low carbonation. Mellow autumnal fruit, sour but not acetic with old lemons, pears, pineapple. Moderately oaky at the end. I suppose the Cognac fills out the palate and the oak helps round it out, but it's all pretty seamless (although the breath of booze is a surprise).

Poured from 750mL bottle (2020 vintage). Hazy gold with small white head. Feint cognac in the nose, has more or less disappeared on the taste. Nice funk still, but since the cognac is minimal now, it’s just good, not great.

750ml shared with Ryan at night before leaving Brussels to reduce the bag weight 😬 Vintage 2020. Appearance: hazy (it spent too much time in a backpack) golden with a bit of head. Aroma: funky with some sweetness. Taste: same, nice cognac barrel notes. Overall: good one.

2012 vintage bottle at Moeder tasting at Ammutson. Golden body. Aroma of cognac barrel, vanilla, moderate funk, some apple, slight citrus, subtle funk. Tastes pretty similar. Medium mouthfeel, with a moderate carboantion. Finishes dry, wooden, with cognac barrel, some fruit notes. Tasty. Not among my favorite 50N's I had, but really interesting and elegant, the cognac barrel is still very present. I'm missing a bit more funk though. Score: 8 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 17
