Aroma: smooth with striking wood tones. As flowery and sweet as honey blossom. Almond and vanilla, and of course the normal Quadrupel aroma, which does however remain in the background. The first drink clearly tastes of a smooth red wine, followed by wood, tannins and smoke, which gradually evolve into a soft honey blossom. The warmer the ale is drunk, the more you can taste the oak flavour. The ale seems to get richer in tannins. This makes this batch sufficiently bitter, leaving the wood flavour in the background. This Quadrupel is medium sweet and drier than the normal Quadrupel.

I thought it was a goner but found a couple bottles at Labirratorium, Madrid, who knows where they came from. When trying to open the muselet it broke apart and pincers came in handy; then the plastic cork wouldn't come out and had to use latex rubber to force it open. Wow, so many tools just to open a little bottle. Okay, let's review this one: a dark mahogany pour with some sediment floating; no head or bubbles at all. Aroma reveals our batch #13 is going down: loads of oxydation scents present, from dust to apple seeds, from mould to barn. Mmmph! There's also caramel and molasses and raisins and plums, but they gave way to faulty odors and that's a pity: should've sipped this quad five or so years ago. If you wait long enough, some nice tinges of chocolate and almonds and cinnamon will appear: but do NOT, under no circumstance, move your snifter -or else youl'll be back to square one. Mouthfeel looks better than the nose: velvety, slick, no carbonation whatsoever. Quite boozy and spicy, more reminiscent of port or Madeira wines rather than of any other ale, even oak-aged quads. Finish is boozy, ester-y and full of spices (clover, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper): you don't get the faults that where present at the smell stage. So maybe two years ago, rather than five, it might have achieved excellence, even though now it's going no-brakes downslope.

Very dark with no head or carbonation. Seems to have gone very watery. Still plenty of wood and some vanilla too but also some mushroom mustiness. It's best days have passed.

Corked bottle from Benzai, thanks! Dark brown color. Bourbon, soft oak, floral notes and acacia in the aroma. A boozy oaky flavor is dominating. Citrus, oak, vanilla, floral notes. Amazing what a barrel can do with a beer.

A special gift from a very good friend, talking about you Benzai. You can't keep these bottles forever. Long out of production I hope the contents are okay unlike what happened in some of the more recent reviews.. I open the 375 ml bottle, cork was uncooperative, and tilt into a Chimay glass while listening to some Eric Clapton, hoping for the best. It comes out an autumn brown with very little in the way of head. The scent is hard candy, wheat bread and brown sugar. I take a drink, yes, I believe it has declined unfortunately. Lightly caramel, straw, a bit of woodiness. It has just lost its punch. Unfortunate but a special tasting nonetheless. Thanks for the thought and the effort Rene.

Dark brown colour, no foam. Sweet plums, caramel, vinous notes, some wood, oxidized. A pity of the plastic cork. Beer is oxidized and flat.

375ml bottle. Hazy, dark brown colour, some macropore, off-white bubbles on top. Spicy, fruity, malty aroma with BA notes, dried fruit, marmite, lovage, milk chocolate, Bourbon, vanilla, hints of plum, raisin, fig etc. Taste is sweet-ish malty, fruity, chocolately, dry oaky, slightly spicy, notes of milk chocolate, raisin, plum, fig, marmite, Bourbon, vanilla, increasing sweetness with toffee and caramel notes; lingering sweet malty, minimally alcoholic and warming finish. Soft palate, flat carbonation. Quite complex, but insipid, without any kick or hint of freshness. Not my cup of tea.
