This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.
Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.
Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip (original extract: 18.5%, abv: over 7.0%).

Bottle from the LCBO. Cole coloured pour, with a medium beige head. Very malty, dark, semi sweet, nutty cereals, hints of sherry. Light mouth feel, solid carb. Low to medium bitter, roasty, toasty finish, light coffee, loads of malts, no hops. Fantastic example of the style.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is brown and dark malts with caramel, brown sugar, light roast, touch of dried fruits. Flavour is medium sweet and light bitter. Body is medium. Solid Doppelbock, a bit too thin to rank among the greats.

It's a German bock kinda night. After this I might crack a Budweiser and sit on my tailgate and listen to county music.

Notes from October 2013 I think I had a dreadfully old bottle of this years ago. New import edition. Bottle from New Beer Distro. Batch L 1693. Whatever that means. Half inch of fleeting tan head. Clear black tea, black on brown on red sort of body. Smells of maple, spilt Euro lager, & hearty bread. Licorice? Just a touch of stone fruit. Doesn't smell like they sent the freshest examples over. Tastes like Cheerios, scalded milk, sharply charred bbq bitterness, faint scotch. Really, really carbonated. Sizzling. Don't like that. Somewhat itchy/starchy feel. A bit boozy. I looked forward to this beer for so long. It just seems so different from the standards of Celebrator & Korbinian that I've come to love. Oct 08, 2013 Edit Delete

Aromas are malt, caramel, spice and yeast. Flavors are similar to nose with malt, caramel and carbonation standing out. Mildly sweet with enough bitter to balance. Nice beer and true to style.

Bready roasted malt, mild molasses sweetness, mild bitterness. Fairly rich. Decent for the type. Bottle LCBO.
