Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is not filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

As pictured, its a big green & silver pounder 3$ can. Got it a Chalet Premier in North LIma, nice place BTW. Of course hell means helles, you know, a dork, oops I mean dort. Not what you think. Of course its clear pale macro in eye. Big giant foaming head in the mug. Smell is somewhat mildly perfume olfactory. Pretty good co2. The big thing however is the taste; its big bitter lager, in the obtuser style. For 5%, it sure tastes like its more. I want to call it a sharp pilz but this stuff is broader and duller. Quite difficult. Yes, I guess it is lager from hellos, belles, elvis - helles. eh? Longish bitter bullshit finish. Bout as enjoyable as a ubiquitous IPA. Not impressed.

Surly Hell Lager 5% Nice copper color with a thick head of foam the aroma has soft herbal hops while the malt gives honey graham notes. The first sip was a bit overly sweet but with a bit of time the hops came through nicely to create a balanced quaffable brew.

Absolute lager goodness. Mild grain sweetness couples with straw and grass, accented by apple and lemon, leading to a floral bitterness on the back end laced with citrus pith and cut grass. Slight toasted notes come through in the fade. Friggin’ delicious.

Pours clear bright gold into a stein. Bright white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Cracker and hay aromas. Crisp with caramel, earthy hop and wet hay front to back. Lasting bitter earth and wet hay finish. Nice.

Can. Pours clear pale gold with a white head. Gusher. Gushed right on to my carpet so some deductions on the final score. But surprisingly good for a lager. Light malt, cracker, some earthy hops. Crisp finish.
