Dopplebock started out as a Lenten beer for the monks in Germany. During Lent they would forgo solid food and get all their sustenance from beer. Needless to say it was big beer with lots of unfermented dextrins. Once the public got a taste it became very popular. We call our beer Mediator because we think that a 22 ounce bottle is probably better shared than drunk alone. It's rich, toasty and malty, with a few plum notes on the palate and the slightest roasted character in the finish.

16oz can from Tavour. Dark, clear brown pour, foamy head settles down. Sweet, malty aroma, raisins. Taste is sweet, woody, malty, raisins, chocolate with a faint bitterness at the back. Smooth, nice feel.

Can. Pours clear chestnut, medium beige head, good lacing. Aroma is a bit dusty, caramelized sugars, noble hop. Flavor is light plus sweet, light plus bitter. Fairly sharp. Hint of smoke. Medium body. A bit overattenuated perhaps? It doesn't have the rich malty character i would expect.

500mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out toasted bready malt, toasted chestnuts, and a touch of caramel. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted chestnuts, bready malt, and some caramel. Very nutty and herbal, but the bready caramel character is very tasteful. Very good.

Tasting at Oakes' Manor
Dark amber to amber colour, large frothy head. The aroma is at the same time delicate and deep, rich biscuity malts, hint of walnut. Lean body, very nice malt and caramel base with a biscuity accent, clean, some roasted nuts, honey, peanuts, and correct bitterness.
Very good clean Doppelbock.

Medium brown. Bubbly head. On the nose, this has some crackery malts, with a nutty note. Moderate sweetness, with a touch of toffee. It's mellow, with a hit of toffee, but I'm thinking they had a nice maibock that brought a lot of malt.

Bomber from Corti Brothers. Pours dark copper with a yellow beige head. Aroma is somewhat treacly with med dark fruits. Med body or so. Flavor is a little treacly, a touch cola, and arguably with a little plum fruit. Not at all sticky. Could be some noble hop. Nice.
