Allagash Odyssey is a dark wheat beer aged for four months, a portion in oak barrels and the remainder in stainless tanks. The grain bill includes 2-row barley, malted wheat and a generous amount of roasted barley. This deep brown beer boasts an aroma of black treacle and raisin. Candi sugar, a traditional ingredient in some Belgian beer, is added during the boil. The flavor hints at dates, with a mildly roasted finish imparted by aging in both medium and heavy toasted American oak barrels. It has a dry finish, punctuated by vanilla.

Bottle, 75cl corked, 2014 vintage. Shared by bergstaden. A dark reddish brown beer topped by a dense, beige head. Unclear. It’s lightly roasted on the nose, with nuts and toffee, some dark chocolate, the typical Belgian strong ale touch, some cork and cellar and some dark chocolate, roasted oats, some cellar and wood and a faint funky touch. It’s sweet, but there’s enough bitterness to prevent it from feeling cloying. Lasting Belgo-fruity finish with some chocolate hints and cellar and wood hints. Another wonderful beer from Allagash. 151010

On tap at Cask and Vine with Mr Barleywine. Dark brown in color with a smallish tan head. Rich sweet brown sugar with huge prune, raisin and date like aromas. Rich sweet maltiness balanced with a touch of alcohol. Beautiful sipper!

Clear deep nutty color with an off white head. Spicy, fruity and bready aroma. Medium + body. Tad sweet and a moderate bitterness. A bit fizzy carbonation. Oak, bready, some sugar, some spices and mild smoked flavor. Decent ale. A bit strange carbonation. Well maked alcohol.

Bottle courtesy of Marsiblursi. Pours hazy dark reddish brown with a rather small creamy goldenish beige head that leaves some sprace thick lacing and trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and estery with sweet dark bread, caramel, baked pears, marzipan, moist soil, leather, lemon peal and alcohol. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter and malty with sweet dark bread, caramel, toffee, baked pears, apple sauce, hay, moist soil, charred wood and hints of grapefruit pith. Mouthfeel is soft, round, very tiny astringent, tiny boozy and near full bodied. finish is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and estery with sweet dark bread, toffee, baked pears, moist soil, lemon peal, charred wood, pepper corns and hints of marzipan. Very nice subtly complex belgian strong dark ale.
