A well balanced dark mild, whose chocolate and fruity flavours complement its roasted long smooth finish. Category winner at the G.B.B.F. and overall runner up in 2005.

500ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo - the penultimate English region - thank you very much!]. Clear, darkest brown, almost black colour with ruby glimmer and small to averge, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white to beige head. Toasty, nutty, chocolately, dark malty aroma, notes of toffee, a touch of coffee, fruity hoppy overtones with hints of red berries. Taste is slightly dry, toasty and nutty malty, minimally grassy and bitter hoppy, minimally diluted hints of toffee, coffee surrogate, some malt spiciness, cautious fruity hoppy overtones with a touch of red berries and dreid fruit. Very nice.

Cask ale, third, at the brewpub in Oakham. Shared with Finn. Clear dark mahogany coloured body, steady fawn-coloured head. Dotted spots on the glass. Malt-driven aromas, mid-sweet. Earthy dark malty taste, hints of chocolate. Nicely roasted finish. Tasty mild. (11.02.2019).

Cask at Great Northern Hotel, Peterborough. Reddish amber colour, thin tan foam head leaving lacing and malty, red fruity aroma. Taste is malt & grain, some sourish red berry fruit and earthiness. Light bodied, soft carbonation, dry mild light bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

Cask at the brewery taproom. Pours clear dark brown with a beige head. Aroma & taste is light sweet, nutty & smooth. Light to medium body, fine carb with a dry finish. Pretty decent interpretation of the style

Gravity cask at the 2016 Leicester Beer Festival. Dark brown with only a suggestion of head. Small amount of visible carbonation. Red berry, hazelnut and cola in the aroma. Nice but predictable. Taste is better: sweet but with a gentle roasted malt quality. Sweet Ovaltine finish. Fuller body than most milds. Nice.

Bottle thanks to Benzai - Pours dark brown. Nose/taste of cocoa, dark sugar and touch of dry liquid smoke - lighter bodied. Pretty good for the style.
