The beer starts off with an initial malt sweetness that fades into a firm but subtle hop presence. The lager yeast and cold maturation ensure a crisp smooth finish. From the French word "Garde" meaning something worth keeping, this Biere de Garde styled Farmhouse Ale is a most delicious companion to a loaf of freshly baked bread from the oven. Grab a seat on the porch, some soft cheese and a tree ripened apple from your grandmother's old orchard. Relax and watch the evening arrive as the afternoon sun is consumed by the illuminating moon over the gardens. We brewed Avant Garde for you, our friends and families. Here's to things worth guarding over.

Interesting take on this style of beer. I’ve had some beers from thsi style from France, and they all seemed to be quite pilsener in flavour with some shrap hops, this was the opposite. This was a cloudy murky caramel color. lots of caramel and some ripe apples, and pears in the aroma, along with some bready malts. Flavour is smooth, and creamy with some more BIG caramel notes. Finishes quite sweet, interesting take on the style. but really on the other side of the coin its bang on for the style. i enjoyed it.

Bottle from The Beer Mongers, Portland. Aroma is bready malt, sweet ripe fruits, apricot, yeast, spicy notes, mild candied fruits, peach, touch of pear, lightly floral. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet and moderate bitter with a hint of tartness. Body is medium with fairly lively carbonation. Very nice complex array of farmhouse flavours, rich stuff.

Pale amber, bit of white head. Smells citrussy, a bit sweet. Light body. Taste is soft, medium bitter with a light sweetness. Some caramel, plenty of orange zest, ending on a slight lingering bitter aftertaste. Very refreshing and easy.
