Keg at the Earl of Essex - London. Pours clear, dark gold with a fine, creamy white head. The nose holds flowers, herbs, some bread. Medium sweet flavor with further florals, faint cinnamon, herbs, dry bread, faint ginger. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet to finish with more cinnamon essence, light leafy bitterness, some bready sugars, dry herbs. Novel stuff. Good gruit! Haters gonna hate when gruit’s the rate.

Draught at Mikkeller and Friends, Copenhagen
Cloudy dark amber color with compact head. The aroma is herbal, there is some light mint, sage, ash tree, sugar, bread; it smells like a The Body Shop, or a candy bag. Weak mouthfeel; it has a strange flavor of stale bread with a moderate herbal presence (mint/sage), very light aspartame, low bitterness; breadish final.
No, I don’t appreciate the historical experiment; try to brew the perfect Helles instead. I’m happy not to live in the Middle Age and to have access to better beers than this.
