The Saison is a classic Belgian style, not often seen outside of its homeland. It was traditionally brewed by farmers and their workers as a beverage to consume during the summer months.

Bridge Road Brewers have crafted their own Saison to add to their Chevalier range. This beer is quite unique, light straw in colour, with a tight bright white head. Aromas are dominated by esters and phenolic characters, owing to the Saison yeast strain, which also gives the beer its characteristic tart, dry and acidic profile.

This citrus character combined with grassy hop flavours make this a great food beer, try it with anything from seafood to blue cheese.

330ml bottle - Pours a hazy dirty straw colour with an average sized frothy near white head. Aroma is malty, ripe fruit and yeasty with some spicy hop notes. A moderately sweet taste, light grainy wheat and ripe fruit flavours (overripe bananas). Light acidity and bitterness with a dryish finish, quite good.

On tap at Beer DeLuxe Melbourne, pours a hazy blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out notes of green melon, brett funk, and crackery malt. Flavour is similar, with lots of underripe green melon, citrus and medium brett funk. Not the most complex, but it works alright. Underripe melon notes dominate. Solid, but nothing overly extraordinary.

Keg at Mother Kelly’s - London. Pours clear yellow-gold with a creamy white head. Interesting aroma, maybe some tropical fruity bubblegum, lemon, sugary pale bread. Medium sweet flavor with lots of sugary, lightly doughy bread, candied lemon, tangerine, more bubblegum, esters, watermelon, flowers. Medium bodied with fine to average carboantion. Lightly warming in the finish, very sweet, lightly syrupy, with more floral notes, yeast, bubblegum, white grape. Novel, but in the end it sits a bit heavy on the palate and just isn’t that drinkable.

Yellow, cloudy, white head. Light sweetness, spicy, yeasty, a bit funky. Not overly complex just a solid saison. Good but not great. Downed in a Ute after a day at the brewpub.

750ml bottle. Kitty’s, Helsinki. Bottled on 040413. Hazy golden color, thin white head. Pear, yeast, wheat, dough in aroma. Flavor has dough, spicy notes, pear, sweetness. Certainly not the beer I was expecting.
