The Saison is a classic Belgian style, not often seen outside of its homeland. It was traditionally brewed by farmers and their workers as a beverage to consume during the summer months.
Bridge Road Brewers have crafted their own Saison to add to their Chevalier range. This beer is quite unique, light straw in colour, with a tight bright white head. Aromas are dominated by esters and phenolic characters, owing to the Saison yeast strain, which also gives the beer its characteristic tart, dry and acidic profile.
This citrus character combined with grassy hop flavours make this a great food beer, try it with anything from seafood to blue cheese.

750 ml bottle. Close to clear golden body with a medium sized white head. Mild aroma of pale malt, slightly fruity and a bit spicy. Flavor is what I call typical Saison – not easy to describe, not particular dominating in any direction, feels pretty average until you give it some time and get a bit deeper into the experience. Soft pale malt, mild fruitiness, spicy yeast, some pepper, low bitterness. Fine balanced body and medium aftertaste. Nothing extraordinary really, but quite pleasant anyway.

Bottle, 75cl. It pours an almost clear one, golden in color, and with a lasting, two finger white head. Some curtains. There’s pale malts and piney, peppery hops. Citrus peel too, some banana and a tad too much yeast. It’s dry on the palate, with a nice carbonation level. Medium body. Pale malts, green apples, banana, lemon and a pleasant bitterness. Fruity, lightly bitter finish. Nothing extraordinary going on here, but it’s an honest and nice beer. 131212

(Bottle, 0.75 l, at Hilpeä Hauki, 2013101) The beer poured pale golden and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had spices, sourness, pepper and fruitiness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, spices, Belgian style yeast, malts, hops and bitterness. Aftertaste was spicy, hoppy and bitter. A tasty saison.

Draft at Taps Beer Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a cloudy dark amber with a long-lasting frothy white head. The aroma is dry citrus fruits leading to a slightly sour, medicinal, aspirin like flavour with some grapefruit citrus and and hint of malt on the palate. From the way I’ve described it it sounds dreadful, but I have to set the record straight and give this beer a big thumbs up. It was certainly flavour packed and uber refreshing.

Big offwhite head. Clear yellow body with light carbonation. Funky dried fruit and sugar aroma with citric honey notes. Dry-sweet resiny funky sugary taste with dried fruit and honey notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish wooden fruity aftertaste with funky earthy banana and resin notes. Lovely, drinkable, and interesting. Very similar to Westmalle Trippel, but weaker. (0.75l bottle, from Kihoskh, Copenhagen.)
