Every year we age a special batch of our much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Whiskey barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin.

Prior to 2010, Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin was released in such limited quantities that it was available only at the North Coast Brewing retail shop in Fort Bragg, California. However, we received so many requests for this beer that we began producing enough Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin to put into broader, but still limited, distribution.

Brewmaster’s Tasting Notes
This beer pours jet black with a comforting layer of toffee-colored foam. Warm, sweet ethanol rises from the glass carrying roasted notes of bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa. The bourbon character from the barrel-aging gives the beer a full-bodied creaminess and a warm, tingling heat.

Bottle at Novare, as pictured, 11/8/25.
Prune and black pepper with long, dry, old lead. Not oxidized, somehow. Chocolate, rum, vanilla, no alcohol. Maybe some old hop?
Soft, still, again not oxidized. Not boozey. Lighter bodied but not thin. Good barrel character. Lots of lead and spice. Easygoing and chocolatey with soft bourbon. For 13 years this is in astoundingly good shape.

I used to think the regular Old Rasputin imperial stout was something pretty grand. That was a long time ago, I've had many in the style better. Tonight I have a 12 oz bottle of the beer but this time it's aged in bourbon barrels, XXV edition the label says. Should be a step up. The bottle came from a Total Wine but when and where, I have no clue now. I take the cap off and pour, absolutely, totally black in color with a modest cover of parchment tan foam. I will say right off, the nose is mighty fine. Dark chocolate, dark fruit, malt and grain and a promise of the booze. The drink finally. It is not extraordinary but it is good. Scorched grain, berries, bakers chocolate, vanilla, malt and enough bourbon to register. A tasty imperial stout, I like it, but was expecting something really big.
